TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY!!! ARGHH!
Hi all
my gosh what a head f**k all this is to me. right ive just bought my first classic scooby wrx sti v2 1996... took me ages to work out what version it was.. but now im there. right sooooo im ready to modify!! which i thought would be fun, click click here and there and whoolllla i ordered a k-n filter kit and a ssqv hsk dump valve to start.
still trying to work out how to move around on this scooby net site, i come across a few ... well quite alot of you guys saying DONT upgrade filter and recirc valve. so ive cancelled my orders making up complete rubbish excuses. can one of you just confirm that it is best to keep the BOG STANDARD filter and recirc valve(why for the induction kit???)... or can you get slightly better ones???? i mean it is a tremendous shame to not have that whoooshing noise..but thats fine. so what do i buy?? im thinking maybe remap? or do i need a all new ecu? and can you recommend a place for me im in north london.. thank you
alex...
lol im so crap at comps ... just trying to work out how to load pictures on computer....

The upgrading of the panel filter is always good, K&N, Green Cotton etc.
Dump valves are mainly a noise/yoof thing, but no performance gains.
Uprate the fuel pump is also recommended and running it on Shell V-Power/Optimax/Tesco 99 if your modding the car for more power.
Early cars can be re-mapped but you need to mod the ECU first, not my forte but someone will be along soon as this is a big can of worms. This can be an expensive item.
The brakes on early cars are shocking, so think about these too, 4 pots from later cars are a good option with better discs, pads and brake fluid.
Suspension will also improve the handling and therefore the performance. New ARB's better droplinks and shocks and springs.
A more free flowing exhaust with a sport cat is also on the to do list.
Your wallet will be depleted very quickly the more you want.

Hi, for starters your year car can't be remaped. You need to either replace the whole ecu, or fit a mappable daughter board such as the ESL Live one.
Induction kits aren't needed until you go for a front mount intercooler(fmic), as the air box needs removing to fit the pipework. A good replacement panel filter will do fine.
What power are you after? It can get expensive once you start changing ecu's, mapping, injectors etc. Set a budget and go from there, some good stuff can be had cheap second hand.

get a green cotton filter usuall yabout 40 quid
obviously you want a dump valve, sometimes it cam make the tickover a bit dodgy but most are ok, most ppl have one so i wouldny worry about it
exhaust decatted preferable 3" - ive seen full kits from turbo back for less than 200 quid (2nd hand) - you especially want the decat downpipe gives big gains
then a remap, that tsl daughter board is a bargain you get the board and a remap for cant remember the price - 300 quid ish now that is cheap
oh forgot you will then need a boost controller, either a manual or electronic, ive always had electronic ones, usually 200 quid upwards
that should see you with a nice power hike
after that it gets very expensive

right ive just ordered a k&n panel filter. my aim is to use the car for track days. ive got my first one in silverstone end of month just to see what is like as it is. i have noticed that the brakes are aaawwful, and can imagine they will become usless on track very quickly after few laps, lol just checked how much 4 pot brakes calipers are as a kit!! time to start selling my self at kingscross again.
im reading 275ps on the stat list..is that true? i know that it would of dropped a few horses over the years, can i assume shes running roughly around that mark? i thought that it was the 97 on wards that the ecu could not be programmed?

Try not to get carried away! Brakes will always be a good idea. As for the other mods, decide what you want, and do it all at the same time, this will save money on mapping each time you fit something new.
I have the ESL live ecu, it is good value.
£400 for the calipers etc is over priced.

Slow down & take a breath....
How much cash do you have to play with, thats the best starting point.
If it were my car & looking to do track days, I would get the brakes sorted first. Speak to Ian at godspeed brakes, he will advise on the best options for your car. You may be restricted by the current wheel size, i.e. if your car has 15" rims then it mat not be possible to get OEM 4 pots to fit.
After that I'd look at having it serviced & all the fluids changed, brake, clutch, gearbox & rear diff, as well as engine & coolant.
Only then would I think about increasing the performance. If the car is 100% standard, then a less restrictive exhaust will improve throttle response & release a few ponies, after that a decent panel filter & a remap are a very good starting point & should see you near 300bhp.
You could then go for ported exhaust manifolds & up pipe, a different turbo & intercooler. It all comes down to money.
Get the car serviced & in tip top condition, get the brakes changed & enjoy the car on the track, you might be surprised by how well it goes & handles in standard form.
hope that helps

well as money/budget goes i havnt realy set a maximum. im not rich so i cannot go real crazy. i supose what ever i feel i need to buy, the next month il just do some overtime to pretend its enought to cover it ....and then just put it on the card!
i think what il do first is.... *takes a deep breath* ...calm down.
next im going to look for a set of subaru 4 pot calipers brake kit.
and yes your very right, start from the beginning and give the old girl a good service.
well may i thank you all for nursing me thru my head f**k. i feel much better now.

Bump means, to bump a topic to the top of the pile, so it shows up when you click "new posts" - more people are likely to see your question if its bumped a few times.
Be careful buying secondhand Subaru 4 pots, they are renowned for the pistons sticking, I personally would speak to Ian Godney at godspeedbrakes , he sells refurbished calipers with pistons that don't corrode & seize up.

as others have said here, brakes first as the two pots are horrendous, braided brake lines, then i'd do the rear anti roll bar and droplinks as standard subarus do like to oversteer and this corrects it. then coilovers and a geo setup, a decent set of tyres and a harness for the drivers seat. all this will make the car alot quicker round the track then normal without touching the engine.
