Question Crank? Engine Noises - can I DIY?

Hi - have had an engine rebuild and have run the car in but its now started to make noises. Took it back to the SUbaru specialist and they used a stethescope to listen to the noises coming from the engine block.

Is this the crank?

I am currently unemployed and need the car back on the road whilst not spending a lot of money (I know this is unheard of ) - as a relative newbie to car engines (allbeit being a quick learner) can I:

1. Fix the problem myself?
2. Do I need replacement parts and if so - estimated costs etc?
3. Worth doing?

The car is a bugeye 2001 UK Impreza WRX if this helps.

Alternatively, if some kind soul wants a crack at it - I can barter with something? - just let me know if you need anything !! It's worth the ask!!

Thanks

Jai

Build should be warrantied? how many miles have you done since it was rebuilt?

who did the rebuild? you will need to be more specific in what noises the engine is making, as for you tackling it yourself, anything is possible.

Since the build I've done about 1100 miles and the garage said that it'd cost - I'll take that issue up with them but ideally I would like to try and DIY it with a friend of mine who know's a bit more about cars than me.

Noisewise - I do remember the garage saying it was the crank. I'm just charging the battery up at the moment so will fire it up and double check - is there a way I can check apart from the noise thing?

thanks for the help guys

Did they grind the original crank or replace it with a new one?

haven't a clue buddy - would that make a difference?

Ultimately I'd love to get my hands dirty and have a go myself - I know it's not the best course of action but normally I can turn my hand to anything

is there some kind of haynes manual or diy guide online or available to buy?

Yup, if they ground it then that would be a good reason its noisy, you are not suppose to grind em, just replace em.

It will be up the duff, subaru cranks should never be reground, they should be replaced, they normally fail within the first 1k miles, similar to what you have by the looks, you will have to check with the engine builders to see if they have reground the crank or not.

cheers Tony

I'm guessing it will have been reground.

Honestly speaking - do you think a newbie should attempt the work himself? I am of the opinion that you never learn anything unless you have a bash yourself?

If your mechanically handy then have a go, new crank will cost you 5-600 quid for one of the better twin scroll nitrided/drilled ones (better oil feed to the main bearings) but have a word with API, they will give you better (and free) advice

once i've pulled it all apart I presume it'll become more obvious if it is the crank? ie. will it show obvious signs of being buggered?!

5-600? I didn't expect it to be that expensive lol - would it worth a trip to the breakers or should I stick with someplace else?

is there a overall guide or a step-by-step? i know I'm chasing clouds but if I at least know the level of work involved I can decide if I should leave it or go for it - don't want to be sat on the garage floor with bits of scooby around me and not know where things go lol

That does include the ACL bearings with the crank though
