Default what speed?

hi all

last night i had my car (99 v5 type r) flat out in fifth gear at 8100k revs

my speedo was reading 165 mph but i think its a little optomistic

does anyone know what what the true speed would have been?

probably 150 or slightly less.
Take it this was on a "private road".

yeah on a private road never been over 70 on normal roads

there was a lot of wind noise i think from the wind deflectors
and i was worried the spoiler would come off or scoop get ripped out
but it had to be done as i was racing and beating an sti 8

155mph, and it probably didnt do your engine any good tbh these dont like being driven flat out as you dont get the full weight of the air onto the intercooler at those speeds so the temps go up and they det the engines to death but some run better than others, some blow up and some dont

Im lucky enough to live in germany so i have motorways without speed limits. My gps always says im doing about 8 mph less then my speedo so you can factor for at least 10 mph

fair enough for giving it a go (on private land of course) but seriously these engine don't like be run at high speeds for long periods of time and most end with a huge hole in the side of the block so this time I say you have been lucky and I would suggest giving it a little tlc and an oil change. Or next time it will be a post stating how poo these cars are that the block let go as I was drivin it at 8k @ 155 mph and the thing let go why is this. Or worse you clipped a pot hole, rabbit run out flipped it wrote it off and I am lucky to be alive !

Fair played for having the ***** to pull it off and not here to judge what you do with your car as each to their own but it won't last long driven like that.

They were NEVER built for flatout top speed runs, read the post above about charge temps rising and engine det.

Fill your boots, there will be a massive rush of adrenalin when the day comes to pay for a rebuild

Think red something about the design of the bonnet and the scoop that over 100mph ' ish the air flows over the scoop and not into it. The charge temps will hit the roof the car dets it's **** off then let's go. To the original poster go get a front mount, map it in with a simtec so the car is maf'less then spank it on a track, not exactly how Subaru let it leave the factory but do those couple of bits and away you go

Mine is limited to 155 mph, so no silly stuff here... at around 6000 rpm.

Depends on the tyre sizing ..

My speedo is about 20mph fast at 165 on my road tyres - on the Marham runway

I'm not sure your car was made for 'this'
Sure, it was made to accelerate very quickly and with fantastic all weather grip, but the fact that it would have been limited to 112mph suggests that it wasn't massively R & D'd for sustained high speed driving?

Either way, fair play to you mate - the bonnets on all the scoobs I've owned look like they want to tear off at anything approaching 3 figures

There are actually a lot less people on here judging you and telling you off for this than I thought! I just haven't got the ***** to do it as if you're caught doing 150mph you're probably going inside for a couple months! Or at least banned for a couple years! Fair play though.

very clever, think of the consequences if either of you or both of you crashed into some innocent non road racing individuals,

I agree with you chris, my uk turbo had 135k & was std and i still saw off an mr2 turbo @143 mph(tom tom),but my revs were just over 5500 rpm,i only did it the once ,but that was enough for me to know that the car could do what the manufactures claimed.
From reading your post I dont think you were ragging it at 8100 rpm for 10 miles down the motorway or the engine would have probably let go,but a bit of spirited driving once in a blue moon shouldn't kill the car.
