STI vs other high performance cars on MPG?
I am thinking about getting a another STI, my problem is I do about 80 miles a day to and from work. I spend about £380 a month now on the train. My wife is trying to make me get a car that's good on MPG.
my question is doing about 1300 miles a month where does STI stand in terms of cost (gas), say vs GTI or other 200+ bhp cars?
also can anyone suggest a car that is as fun to drive as scooby thats better on MPG and i can get away with around >250 on gas a month?

NOT as much fun as a scooby, but they are brilliant

i have ruffly worked out that if you were fortunate enough to get 250 miles out of an STI on motor ways you would be using about 5 and a bit tanks a month to get to work and back at ruffly £60 a tank at current prices I think you will be looking about 300 pound a month before any social milage!
I have a wrx and regularly get between 24-28mpg on mixed driving and i am getting through £160 a month currently going 24miles a day 12 there 12 back! + driving about on my days off.

You could get a SEAT Leon Cupra R, get it remapped to 260bhp and still enjoy 30+ miles per gallon, more toys, a more refined commuting car. Job done.
Logically it makes more sense to get one of those with the current climate, cheaper insurance/costs/fuel/ still quick, so taking all that into consideration, I decided that that the right thing to do was...

My old E60 M5 average 11.2mpg !!!!!, my new E90 M3 average 15.4 mpg !!! , so compare to Subaru ...you guys are saving a packet on just the fuel alone, but then you dont have a V10/V8 under the hood

My mates 335D running 286/432 is reported to do the 30-70 sprint in 3.4s, some 0.3s faster than the V10 M5 
although this figure has been disputed, but 03-05 PPP'd STi's are only quoted at 5.4s by Prodrive. It is significantly quicker than any standard and even quite highly mod'd Scoob. Indeed, on the Autobahn en-route to Stelvio he demolished another mate in a 400BHP 03 STi. As the majority of enthusiastic driving is done between these speeds I find it a much more reliable measure of a cars on road performance. Once on the Alpine pass's the Scoob showed it a clean pair of heals due to a combination of excellent chassis, coilovers, bars and bracing, lower weight (200kg), and of course, AWD. Over the entire trip he reported an average of 43mpg, which included hooning it in the twisties and caning it on the Autobahns. The Scoob was down in the teens ! The same car now boasts some 335BHP and 500 lb/ft for a measly £380 Bluefin chip, and could have gone to 360/520 for another £400 or so. Performance, comfort, luxury and economy in one brilliant machine. If only I could afford one

When I last worked it out I got 24mph on b-roads using a fair bit of boost in an STI RA. I think it's fair to say that you won't find a car with similar power that gives you significantly more.
A car with VTEC (or similar) will give you the best compromise between power and efficiency IMO.

when for a test drive in a BMW 320d m sport, ok its was no STI. its around 160bhp but it was sooooo nice inside and does 45mpg!
I also tested a Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0 DI-D GS4 at the scooby dealer it felt 100 times quicker than the BMW @ just 150bhp both very nice cars. the Lancer comes with so much kit, leather seats, heated, sat nav even a hard drive
ever drive a diesel was impressed. both cost the same as the STI i was looking at

There are lots of alternatives to the Impreza, if you just want a fast car then most of the Hot Hatches will be up to the job. Or big diesel cruisers such as the BMW 335D, on the motorway in a straight line would worry most Impreza's.
I just love my Impreza, I feel like I’m actually driving it more than any hot hatch I’ve driven, (although not driven the latest offering from Ford). I also love the power delivery, sound and the general character and "pantomime" of the car. That’s why I don't consider the running costs, also I only do 8K to 10K miles a year, which helps.
Even nearly three years on the Impreza still puts a smile on my face.

i love the scoob but it is truly **** on fuel consumption, if you drive it like a nun i may get 20mpg but to give it a couple of 20 mile blasts once or twice a week it goes down to about 140 to a tank!!!

BMW 335D start to get a little out of my price range. don't like the hot hatch crew and because i am spending 3 hours a day on the motorway I want a conformable car, good on mpg and a bit of performance.
the best I have seen is the BMW 535D (the fastest diesel I know about) but that is far out of my price range!
