Default Warning! avoid Ideal Engines

I bought a gearbox and diff from Ideal engines aka SMR engines aka Mr engines and was promised delivery 2 days later. I'm still waiting for delivery a week later. Every day I'm promised next or same day delivery, I've been given a tracking number which turned out to be bogus. And everytime I'm told 'I'll give you a call back' guess what.....they don't call back.

I just thought I'd post here so you guys can avoid the stress and disappointment when the time comes to upgrade your box/engine

And after it arrived, the box leaked and the diff was gash! it broke after 50 ish miles

Your troubles may not end even if parts do turn up...

Never ceases to amaze me how these people are not removed .... if you get my drift?

At one point you will rip someone off who has a screw lose, and they will come to get you armed with a 12 bore .... how do they get out of that?

Wonder how long a thread like that would last had it been started here.

I now have the diff and gearbox but only after aggressive action.

Turns out the 'recon' gearbox has an oil leak!!!!!

Weren't they on rogue traders once??

Fleet company I work for have bought few engines and gearboxes from them in the past and most or all with bad results. When I took over the parts department my first task was to return all the crap and get our money back.

Default Ideal Engines Barking

I beg you all do not go anywhere near this bunch of cowboys!!

Picked up car yesterday after having new engine fitted, made it a quarter of a mile before every warning light on the dash came on!

Have had work checked by aa and an independent garage, both said they have never come across such shoddy work.

Now in the hands of trading standards.

Also another couple were picking up their car after having new engine fitted, swapped numbers as neither of us were confident of work carried out, heard from them today, they made it as far as theexit before car started billowing smoke and had oil pouring out!!

Please avoid them, It WILL cost you in the long run.

A friend bought an engine off these guys 6 months ago, fitted the engine...had no compression.

Rung them and they said they will send another one....

After 9 months and getting heavy with them they sent a refund.

Definately would not touch them with a barge pole after the s**t he's been through with them

i am currently in a dispute with this company, i paid £1595 for an engine on the 11th april, was promised delivery within 2-3 working days and it has not come, now they are ignoring my calls and refusing a refund. im also having to pay for a hire car whilst this is going on. so angry.

You really need to go there and get rowdy, the threat of violence was enough to secure a next day delivery for me.....or if you paid by credit card you can get your money back that way. if you go to your bank and complain they can open up a slow long winded case which will ultimately end up in you issuing court action against these theives. The best bet is to send 1 letter demanding a full refund giving them 7 days to pay it, then you'll need to issue court action. this can be done online and is very easy plus you can add all costs involved like interest from the 11th april and also a charge of £25 for the legal document which is the letter before action. They may send you an engine after the court summons arrives but reject it, do not sign for it!! any engine that comes will be dog ****. These theives have been on rogue traders and are in every forum. they just get an engine out of an old write off and spray it silver, which makes it look new and re-conditioned.
I really hope that you paid by credit card as it will be easy to get your money back -I secretly hope you are a psychopath and you go there and cripple the guys and wrap your car in their skin - Good luck!!

I would do some careful research before parting with nearly £1600 for anything.
The car service industry has a p*ss poor reputation in general but inexcusable if you belong to a forum like this & hear of these nightmares almost on a weekly basis & should be well aware of the idiots about in the 'car spares' or 'servicing' & 'modifiying' arena.

Sorry if that sounds harsh because it is.

I got an engine off smr a few years ago. Head gaskets went after 2000 miles, and no reply to my emails. Put new gaskets on it and done 45000 hard miles since, guess mine must be the exception though.

Being fair, it takes double that amount of money to do a decent job with an Impreza engine. If anybody offers you a "new" engine at around £1600 it's going to be pants.

Sorry to hear this.

Hopefully Ebay will sort something out.

If you do have to take the engine elsewhere I'd strongly suggest that you write Ideal a letter giving them a deadline to inspect and properly sort the engine, failing which you'll obtain 2 written estimates, get the work done and issue a Small Claims Court summons.

If you do sue them you have to follow this 'letter before action' path to give them a chance, otherwise they could wriggle out of it by claiming that you hadn't, and therefore the costs are of your own making, not them.

Keep a note of all correspondence etc. It's much easier when it's fresh in your mind, rather than months down the line if unfortunately you have to take them to court, where of course you'll need to persuade the judge that your version is correct ie. you'll have to be precise and have good documentation, rather than umming and aahing and saying that you're not sure of exact dates and times etc.
