350bhp classic, should i?
looking at buying a classic impreza, will be my third one, i have seen what looks a very nice one for sale, lots of mods but standard looking, its got 350bhp, it has a wr1 turbo, front mount, ecutek, etc etc, mapped by bob rawle, work done by zen performance, exedy clutch last year, big brakes, all for 4k ono, its had a rebuild by subaru about 40k ago, all receipts for everything including rebuild, its now on 93k, standard gearbox. any opinions on a classic running this sort of power, any issues i should look out for? thanks.

sounds pretty good to me as i have a 99 with the standard gearbox running 330/350
the only issue i would try and check is, if can you find out how many miles are on the turbo? if its around 50/60k it might be on its way out soon. depending on how its been driven of course. but its something to think about.

same here fella been running over 300bhp for two years on a uk scoob year 2000. as long as you don't dump the clutch every time you go out you should be fine. later boxes are a bit more robust than the earlier versions but still treat all 5 speeds if you are putting bigger bhp with a bit of respect especially if you don't want to be replacing later.

I drove 700 miles in a day to collect my Scoob running 320/320 on a standard box.
Still remember the drive home now! Ive driven it in extreme anger lol, and its running perfectly still. This will be my third year of ownership
As mentioned, show it respect and it will be fine. I thought the later boxes (96 onwards) were a bit stronger than the earlier ones? Is it the 52 or 54 which is the later one? I cant remember off the top of my head.

I run a 350 bhp or thereabouts (and similar torque). Properly modified and mapped they won't give you any trouble engine wise. There can be no assurances about the gearbox though, depends entire on how it's been treated and how you treat it: standing starts are not to be recommended

Fatigue killed mine, not abuse.
It had only 60k on the clock, running less than 300bhp
By gentle do you mean never use WOT. LOL
3rd is the most likely to go IMHO, well if you use it.
I was only doing 30mph when 3rd went bang!
Perhaps some of the claimed 300+ horses are more of the shetland variety, thats why they last????????

as said above gearbox is the weak link, but scoobs can be so variable that might last for ages. mine blew at 280bhp, but i was giving death on the isle of man lol
as far as the breaking at 30, that doesn't happen parsay, the damage would have been done previously to that, it would have just waited till then to give in. so what you been doing to it??? lol

Well it was std when I bought it LOL
Fitted a Polar chip, doubt its even 280, its done a couple of trackdays and fast road only by that point.
Box 2 (ty755, same casing as ty754)
The next was caused by abuse on the drag strip, 2 runs and a whiney first gear. grrrrr
Box 3 (ty754)
Waiting to be fitted in my garage wont be getting any drag abuse at all, just fast road and track work

Nice looking car that... With everyone's different driving styles I think it is all according how you drive the car a lot of the time, some people treat kit hard and others drive sypathetically.
Some similarities to my spec list with wheels and H&R springs, again a high quality spring, they give a good drop plus being progressive they are comfortable.

Go for a later car that's been unbelievably well maintained, treasured and loved with one owner from new, a bit like this one...
