killed two standard boxes on a TD04; stripped 4th first time and 2nd second go. Pointless saying you will take it easy with a 3550\350 classic...that's going to be a very fast road car and not having gearbox peace of mind will ruin the experience. Buy the car but budget for a PPG replacement

sack ppg, get 6 speed. all feedback suggests ppgs need rebuilding every year and don't support as much power as a 6 speeder, 6 speeders you put in and forget. they cost the same ish so 6 speeder ftw.

Just don't buy from ideal engines they have messed me about so bad on my gearbox......I've paid but 1 week later i get bs tracking numbers, and unkept promises to call me back. I'm having to instruct my credit card company to retract payment

straight cut PPG boxes are guaranteed to 450 ft\lbs and will not need rebuilding every year...no need to go to a six speed below that torque. You save 30kgs and have nicer ratios too

im thinking of having the car inspected before i travel down, looking at £130, makes sense for bit more peace of mind and could also save me a wasted 500 mile round trip. all this gearbox chat has got me a bit worried though i have to admit. how much would a rebuilt box from someone like api cost? just so i can budget if it does happen.

no point rebuilding a standard box, you need to budget for £2.5k for either a PPG or six speed...unless you can source a sti 5\6P1 box which should be OK at 350lbs/ft

I seem to remeber a quote of around 900 quid with restrictions on the warranty.

Ah, the old 'box will be fine' argument. I killed my last box with 300bhp, in 3rd, at about 4.5k revs, foot down. Some take it, others don't. 3rd defo seems the weak spot.
Ans as for engines, standard one at 350 again is hit and miss. Mine was mapped correctly, and it still went, it's all about luck.
350/350 really is the limit at which things get expensive.
But, my RA box has taken 335bhp/320ft/lb no problems.
Clio172, map sensor £60, 440's £50-£100, not exactly going to break the bank! Get it done, and put those Brembo's to good use!

To the OP, thet car looks very nice, and a good price. My engine cost that much for it's rebuild!!!

yup, no idea how he has managed to make that last tbh...perhaps it's not driven on full power very often
