It's usually at LEAST 5p per litre more , sometimes even more, than the equivalent 95 octane.
Yet in France, where EVERY garage does both 95 and 98 octane, there is seldom more than a €0.02 per litre differential. And usually only €0.01.
More petrol company daylight robbery, or higher tax on the better stuff?

Fuel duty in the UK is currently 56.19 pence per litre for all unleaded petrol and diesel.
If V Power is 5p a litre more expensive all but the VAT element of that is down to the oil companies.
They are as complicit as the government in raising our fuel costs yet rarely to they get a mention amongst the tirade of abuse aimed at the government.

If you mean cheap relative to normal unleaded then you had better ask Spain and the oil companies.
Look I am not defending anyone, but it is a cast iron FACT that the duty is the same for V Power as it is for normal unleaded or do you not believe the official tax office figures?

If you think about it in those terms then the government gets about 60% of revenue from fuel prices - they're a thieving bunch of hypocrites, putting up road tax, council tax and fuel duty and offering us less in return every year.
Check this out - AA archives of fuel prices.
In 2008 - the price was still below £1 on average.
Fuel Price Reports : petrol price review 2008 - The AA
So what the hell's happened? The government says it's because OPEC aren't producing enough oil, the oil companies are claiming petrol is more difficult to refine for winter and costs more - it's all bollocks and we know it.
The problem is that the general population are sadly too ****ing bone idle and gutless to do anything about it.
The Chief on here had the drive to organise a fuel protest on SN in late 2008 when prices were breaching £1. Out of over 200 people who said they would definitely attend, about 20 turned up (I was one of them) - it was a pathetic show of spirit, and tbh after the guy and his mates made all the effort to get the BBC to turn up and everything we looked ridiculous, and I felt really sorry that they had come all that way (some had travelled up to 300 miles I believe) and been let down by people who had "had to go shopping" or "had a family emergency".
Until people are willing to act, get off their comfy sofas watching SKY TV and kick this government out on its lying thieving ****, then Brown, Mandelson and Darling will carry on raping us for tax and putting the money they make in their own pockets and spending it on horse**** projects rather than investing it where it needs to go.
Yes, other parties may be no better, but this lot have nothing new to offer except throw more good money after the bad they've wasted in the last decade. It's time for a change. UKIP, christ - even the BNP would be better than Labour right now.
