Keep driving it without speaking to someone in the know(ie. not you), and your car will just be an expensive paperweight.

If you can startthe engine, could you listen to the top of the block with a long implement, like I did in the old days. You will at least be able to work out if its coming from the block or not.

Default noise

Hi THE NOISE COULD BE THE HEAT SHIELD ON THE EXHAUST IT IS A COMMON FAULT ON EARLY IMPREZAS IF THE NOISE GOES WHEN YOU REV THE CAR UP SLIGHTY I WOULD THINK THAT MIGHT BE THE CAUSE.

i have narrowed the problem down to be somthing around the turbo/ gearbox area it is not engine related i do not fink so i dont no but the noise does not go wen the car is reved but with it being idle i fink it cant posibly be the turbo as the turbo does not spin on idle does it ?

As asked above, does it go when you depress the clutch? Input shaft bearing?

Mine did the same, the bearing within the gearbox has broken to bits - currently on the lookout for a gearbox

it could well be where the gearbox has let go and the gears are trying to chew their way to freedom.
