Default Version 2 STi

Might be viewing one of these.

What would i need to look out for and how to tell it's genuine?

Is about £2k, with paint damage and seat rips about the going rate?

Sorry, also...would it make a good project. Ie. strong engine/box. 350 of each would be very nice to achieve.

Mods required to get it there would help.

Re genuine: if its a 1996 model year (series-production) STI V2 Saloon, then the applied model number will confirm this absolutely. If its a rarer STI V2 'Wagon then it wont, because they used a normal WRX AMN for one production year. The AMN should be GC8D4ED if its an STI and GC8D4DD if its an STI Type-RA: GC8D48D is a WRX Saloon.

As an aside; the 1995 altered-production STI Type-RA is sometimes incorrectly referred to as an 'STI2'. This will have a normal Type-RA AMN (GC8C47D), always be white and have DCCD and a roof vent.

GC8D47D would be a normal 1996 WRX Type-RA btw.

There is one for sale in Glasgow for a little bit more.

Already makes 300 and has done for years with no issues. Check out scottishscoobies.com for sale section for details.

The model year indicator is wrong in my posts above. 'D' (as in GC8D) was the code for the 1997 model year; construction of which started in September 1996. 'C' was used for both the 1995 & 1996 model years - sometimes referred to as C1 and C2.

A 1996 model year (C2) STI will have the following applied model number: GC8C4ED. GC8D4ED would relate to a 1997 model year STI, although it may have been built in 1996.

Now isnt that clearer?

Be fussy !!! £2580 bought me this in 2008 !

It's a bit of a mine field and I got lucky tbh with a pretty much mint V2 STi 555 Wagon with no mods apart from the wheels and a Jap fitted Apexi cat back, boost gauge and usual Jap import items. I recently had the clutch changed and it was the original !!!

Early V2 WRX's are just as good as the STi's tbh in some cases depending on what you want the gearboxes are more liveable being slightly longer.

Blown rads, header tanks, ***** induction kits, bolt ons etc all should make you walk away. Body work should be pretty good, and regardless of the cheapness remember is ain't gonna get any better with age.

That's a beaut of a wagon 53.

Maybe i'm just being too keen to get back in the fold. I'll wait for the right one.

I like STI2 'Wagons

The STI V2 'Wagon is mechanically similar to a normal MY96 WRX Saloon, with a standard GC8 TD05 equipped engine: so you can expect similar durability. V3 onwards models were similar to the Saloons and had an applied model number to match.
