Callum, you can't buy 4* anymore, what you get now is 4* LRP (Lead Replacement Petrol) and this is rated at 95 RON or Random Octane Number, hope this helps

Question

Really?
I used to put LRP in my last car every other tank and it definately gave it more "pep".
You sure it's 95 RON? I was expecting 97+

The higher the RON the higher the compression ratio the engine can run without running into compression ignition.

Just out of interest, what was the RON of the old 2,3,4 and 5 Star petrol from the 70s?

LRP is 97 octane. 4-Star was 97 and 5 Star was 101. Don't know about 2 and 3 Star. Also the "old" leaded had a hell of a lot more lead in it than the leaded that was outlawed in 2000. DL

Wouldnt suggest that anyone put LRP in a Subaru, Shell optimax is a better fuel and higher octane (and cheaper) replacement

Pretty sure the old 4* was 98 RON but LRP is defo 97 RON as SUL and LRP are essential the same except for the final additives. LRP will destroy your lamda sensor so not advisable. I think BP do a 98 SUL but I stick to optimax + octane booster which is pretty close to 100 RON by all accounts.
