So I bought a Hawkeye STi...
Hi All,
I finally bit the bullet and bought a hawkeye Sti, on a 57 plate. I'm pretty happy as I've wanted one for years (ever since I bought a bugeye GX in 2004).
I've got a bit of a question about specification... The car was imported by Liaco Subaru of Malta (apparently it's not unheard of) and it was advertised as a Type UK. I was looking at some of the pictures I took (it's getting delivered in a week or so), and I noticed it didn't have the Type UK badge on the back. Is there a difference between an STi and an STi Type UK?
Basically, I'm wondering if a Type UK is better (and therefore worth more) than a 'standard' STi.
Ooh, whilst I'm here - what are your thoughts on Gap Insurance? Is it worth £299 for that extra piece of mind?#
Cheers dudes,

as far as i know mate, a type uk is a limited edition just like the uk300. i maybe wrong so i apologise now. i would prob say that because of the price you have paid then gap ins would be a good idea. only a personal opinion.

This car probably is a parralel import ,lots of 05 onwards cars came although RHD from Germany /Holland /Belgium , I went out and loked last Sat at an 06 crystal grey WRX , log book should show something like "not new in UK at first registation" or something similar ,they are still Euro spec cars ,might be very subtle differences tho ,type UK is the standard UK car , not a LTD dition tho
Hope that clears it up

"Type UK" only means that a similar Euro model was imported by IM and a tracker plus warranty (and badge!) put on it.
When new, your car may have had those added anyway when imported into the UK.
The only other spec difference I can think of is that UK cars have wide airbag front seats and yours might have some better bucket seats.
Check with IM that the warranty was registered with them. If any warranty cover is left then go over the car with a fine toothcomb to claim anything.
Look for clunking rear struts, head gasket and piston problems.

Thanks
Thanks guys, when it's dropped off I'll run it to the nearest stealers and have the warranty & tracker situation checked out. If there are any problems, I will argue the toss with the garage who sold it to me.
Will prob get the gap insurance anyway as it will solve any problems with car value if I spank it into a ditch.

I may be wrong but you only get one years warranty on a "grey" import....
dunx
P.S. It MAY also affect the cost of insurance, but the specialists are clued up on this, if it is Thatcham secure and "tracker'd".

MWC1893 - You've brought near identical to myself. Mine was a parallel import from Cyprus, and has just an Impreza STI badge on the back. See below,
There are a few differences differences between the Type UK cars and the parallel import ones including,
No locking wheel nuts
No alarm as standard
No tracker as standard
Not undercoated
9 times out of 10 the bits above are done by the first owner, as it's still far cheaper to do it afterwards then it is to buy a STI Type UK (so I'm told). However it's still definatly worth checking to ensure you've got these bits.
In addtion to the above you also need to make it clear to your insurance that you've brought a parallel import, and it could make a difference. My insurance company didnt seem to mind but definatley worth checking with them.

STI Mav - thanks for clearing that up.
Any experience with warranty? It's got all the stamps in the service book etc. The garage I bought it from didn't give me any as it was 'still under manufacturers warranty'. Subaru are the best to speak to I suppose, but it'd be good to get the thoughts of the folks here.
Thanks,

Warranty in theory is better. You still get a full 3 years on the car, but you also get 5 (or maybe 10) on the drivetrain on Euro cars. UK dealers were refusing to honour warranties at first, but IM (the official UK importers) were taken to court and now they MUST honour Euro cars as it is a pan-European warranty.
Correct about Alarm, Tracker and locking wheel nuts, but I think it was agreed that the underseal is ok.
Most insurers treat EU imports the same as UK cars, but 99% will insist on a tracker for an STi.

Tracker is a bit hit and miss in my experience. My current insurance comapny wern't fussed that mine didnt have a tracker, but some wont insure without one. Guess it all depends on your postcode, overnight parking arragements and general use.

generally if your insurance company pays out what your car is worth book price then gap insurance pays out the remaining amount to the full price you paid.
As far as i know there are different types of gap insurance, but the one above is the one i have and the best IMO.

I'm not sure how you'd buy it other than at point of sale though - I reckon someone here will be able to highlight the pros/cons

The new age cars have been known by their model year, ie MY06 is the first Hawkeye. Using the numbering system above completely ignores the update that took place during the blobeye period where the MY05 had a major mechanical update with blistered rear arches added to the shell, based on that the hawkeye is a V10.

Why do people continue to use the V numbers for the newage cars? They have never been called this by Subaru, the V6 was the last car to use that system.
