Default HELP Odd clunking noise when on full lock !

As the title says, I'm getting an odd noise when I put my car on full lock. Its an 03 WRX with 35k miles on the clock, and the noise has been occuring the last week or so with the cold weather. I have to drive into a side street straight from start, and then put full right lock on when I reverse so that I'm facing the correct way to exit the street. On doing so I hear a faint clunking noise, like the gear engaging or some mechanical clunk, albeit very faint. There does sometimes feel like a little bit of a judder. I have noticed once the car is warm and I perform the same operation I get nothing !, however leave it for 20 mins and go out in the car again and It happens again. Similar occured the other day in a car park with alot of snow in it too, I was reversing out of a spot and rear wheels hit a small mound of snow which caused something to engage and I heard a similar noise again. Could it be a diff issue ?

This used to happen a lot on my old Audi, but it was just the ABS running a test as I started moving , does the subaru do anything similar and the fact im on full lock is exagerating it.

Thanks for the help, I'm hoping this isnt expensive

May car does this too. Someone may correct me, but I think this is normal. If you turn off the centre diff, the "problem" should go away.

Clunking on full lock can be a wheel bearing on it's way out. Does it hum at speed?

I havent heard a humm, but then again I've had the blowers on quite hard recently with the weather, I'll listen for it tommorow and just wear a thicker jumper :P

Thanks for the suggestion

What about ball joints?

Not had much experience on stuff like this on my scoob, was only on the road 3 weeks last Oct lol. But Im going on my last car (Bmw M3) used to clunk like crazy until i changed the lower arms and bushes, started just like you described and gradually got worse.

May be something to look into

Dan

I believe that on a 4wd on full lock with cold oils can bind a wheel, search for 4wd wheel binding or hopping and see if this applies?
