Hi There,
Is the horse box 2t gross weight complete with the horse(s)?
Is the Horse box 'braked'?
Check you owners book to see what weight the car can acutally safely tow - both braked and unbraked trailers incl. load (horse(s)
Turbo cars are usually fine for towing, not too sure how a 2.0l petrol n/a would cope with an additional 2t to pull along. Having said that what sort of torque figures do you have and how low down is it avaliable (BHP and torque) at 400bhp on a classic it may not be the best towing car, dependant on what else has been done to it - clutch, gearbox, your map, etc.
More info required

You need a decent diesel tbh, a scoob wagon may not have the correct braked/unbraked loads, so look for a 2nd hand landrover 110 or a decent sized diesel estate car

If she likes the subarus - there are probably others better suited to towing horse boxes - Legacy, Outback, Forester...
Although as mentioned previously - Land Rover do produce some vehicles even more popular with the horse, towing, farming and off-road enthuiasts than Subaru
AFAIK - to tow a horse box completely legaly you do really need a full size 4x4 like a Discovery or Defender which can tow up to 3.5 tonnes of box PLUS horse...
People do seem to 'get away' with using incredibly inappropriate vehicles - but safety of yourselves, other road users, £xx,000 worth of horse, possible insurance events... best researching it properly I think

There is a towing weights chart here - Towing Capacity Alfa Romeo,
The Impreza Wagon is OK up to 1.6 tonnes dependant on model... 3.0 Legacy up to 2 tonnes apparently??? - but don't forget the total should include the trailer weight and the largest horse that might be towed.
Maybe get some more advice at Discovery Owners Club :: Welcome to the Land Rover Discovery Owners Club - friendly bunch there and probably some of them have horses
Owning a Disco is much more like owning a Scooby as far as owners clubs and enthusiasts stuff goes - might be worth a foray Prices pretty cheap now too...
Good luck

This is mostly down to weights and type of trailer, a braked trailer has brakes on the trailer wheels and therefore is not so reliant on the tow car to slow it down...
