Question

Thank for clicking here

ok. you drive the car out the garage in the morning then you need to close the garage door. Do you switch engine off or leave it running when you close it?

i know its quick closing it but i know someone that was doing that and someone drove off with here car.
if it ok to start the car then switch off so soon?

I invested in a remote garage door opener from Wickes about £150 best thing I ever did
Drive straight out of the garage, press the button and drive off. Dont even get wet if it rains

Eh how far are you driving the car away from the garage?

I leave mine running as it will be no more than 8ft from me with the drivers door shut.

Stopping the engine just after it has started is not good and could lead to it not starting again because the ECU is currently running through the warm up cycle.

If 8ft is too much position the car so that you can lean on the drivers door while shutting the garage door.

I had a remote opener fitted to my garage door as soon as I ordered my car. There was no way I was leaving it running unattended for any amount of time.

Door openers are great - but remeber that you have to have compatible opening gear on your door - if you have vertical tracks and an up-and-over door, you can't fit a motor to it.

I have to move my VW Polo out of the way first, then reverse out of garage, and put VW Polo back into place, so in between i use a Disclock.

Have to say though, before i got the VW Polo i just used to reverse out and leave her running.I do live in a very rural area mind but even so i dont spose you can be too careful!

Got a electric garage door opener as well

If I need to step out of the car for a bit, I set the turbo timer to keep the engine running and arm the car.

My drive is on an incline and once when it was really snowing i drove my scooby out the garage (2 weeks old), got out closed the door and walked up to close the garage door, heard a noise behind me and the bloody thing was about 12 feet down the drive heading toward a banking. It was sliding because of the snow. Lets just say i have never ran so fast in my life and it was traveling pretty quickely, and i had to open the door to jump in. i bet the neighbours were splitting their sides with laughter. I ended up parked between a post and a tree down the banking, luckly no damage, but that was enough to give me a right scare.

I drive out with the disc lock still on (very carefully), get out of the car to close the garage door. Get back in the car remove the lock and drive away.

Cheers

leave the car running unless you have a real security reason not to.

If you go for the door opener option, I was told to get a chain driven one, more reliable apparently.
Had mine for 6 years now with no problems.

Just a thought, but why not get antoher key cut and then leave keys in ignition with engine running and turn the new spare in the lock so the doors are locked...

Shut the garage... unlock... get in and drive off.

I am lucky enough to live in a rural area so have no problems, except my garage is filled with my motorcycle, lawn mower, tools, weights bench, freezer... and there is only just enough room for me to get inthere let alone the Scooby

This I figgure would be easier done if you get yourself a couple of ramps. Then in the morning, just release the break, gear etc (while in the car), and presto, easy reverse - no pain..

Or just move somewhere with a lower crime risk!

I just open the door, start the car, move out onto the driveway, park on the drive, get out (engine running), close the garage door and drive to work.

If someones that serious about stealing MY car they're going to just bash me over the head anyway. And if it was an opportunistic theft I'd hear them on the gravel drive before they got to me or the car!

And if they did steal it: Ring NAVTrak and get them to activate the Proactive tracker to find out where it goes.

I know we've got to be careful generally. But lets not get paranoid about this...

next you'll be telling me you take your keys with you when you pay for petrol!

I drive out garage, stop car and take out keys, go shut the garage door and lock it, then get back in car and drive off? No problems

Should I not be stopping the car so soon after starting it up?

For heavens sake !! It's a mass-produced car, not Schumachers Ferrari !
Turn it off and keep the keys in your pocket

It's not getting the car out so much as putting it away that bothers me.

I get home, it's dark, the neighbours haven't shut their garage doors. How do I know who's lurking inside?

But I always take the keys with me when I go to pay for petrol (or pay at the pump)!

As far as I can tell the easiest way to do this is to move the car forward out fo the garage with using the throttle. Just let the engine idle and practice your clutch control, that way the turbo won't spin up. Turn off the engine if its that dodgy where you live and close the garage door. If your worried about a double bout of start up engine wear, the oil in you engine will have coated the important parts enough for it not to matter about closing your garage door with the engine switched off, unless it takes you longer than 3-5 minutes.
