classic top rad hose - common fault
guys
i seem to remember reading a while back that the top rad hose on the early classic is a weak point
is this the case and do they just let go or start to weep?
finally would you advise preventative replacement with this cold weather or just wait
many thanks
matt

Mine went about 4 years ago. There was a tiny pin sized hole which was shooting coolant on to the underside of the bonnet. Which then fell neatly onto the heat sheild around the turbo causing huge amounts of steam to exit the engine bay from any and every available exit.
Needless to say this gave me a mild panick attack until I realised what it was.
I would just check the general condition of the hoses and if in doubt replace.

my son's top hose went on his 97and a few months later mine went in the same place on my 98.both had small pin holes in the bend as described above suggesting it must be a common fault in my opinion.

just bought impreza estate of a guy as spares or repair because of the bottom end, only 4 days before he put a new top hose on because it was split, and two tyres as the garage recomended they were changed, so guess it is quite a common thing

I'm looking at changing mine but find it hard to justify buying samco. There are some cheaper silicone hoses on Ebay, anyone used these?

Mine went on my classic, it had only done about 40k at the time. I ordered a full set of autobahn 88 silicone hoses but ended up fitting subaru top and bottom rad hoses as the silicone one's where coming from japan and took longer than expected. The top hose was shot yet the bottom hose was like new so I think its just a top hose problem.

Is yours an STi then?
Are there differences between this set up and the standard import WRX MY97?
Are they all red? It's a bit too gory for me, my last set was yellow.
