Default Problem with car data check

I've been looking at a couple of P1's recently and found one that I fancied viewing.

It has a private plate on it so I phoned the guy and he informed me that the plate has been on it from new, nothing strange there.

I HPi'd the car and all the info tallys up, 2 door Impreza P1, registered in 2000.
The private plate was transfered on it from date of registration however the reg that came off it is a T registration??

The car was registered in 2000??

I then HPi'd the reg that came off and it came back as an RB5???

Theres no doubt in my mind that the owner is genuine so who do I contact to find out why the plate that came off the car is on a 'T' prefix?

Anybody got any explaination?

If I phone my local Subaru garage with the VIN number, would they be able to give me the old registration number assuming car data has made a muck up?

The logical answer is that the P1 had a numberplate applied to it early in its life which came off an Impeza RB5.

OR, the P1 is actually a RB5 .......... ?

Can you trace back to the first owner and check direct with them what the story is?

and also dont forget that you can make a car look older but not newer.

My 2001 car has an L reg number plate, which it could be first registered with if you had it on retention. I would be more bothered about the RB5 bit

If I contact my local Subaru garage with the VIN number, could they give me any info?

I was sure all P1's were W,X,Y and 51 plates?

Or could it have been a demo car?

Subaru will tell you what the VIN was attached to ..... the VIN is a code and will have in it something which identifies it as a P1. It will not point to any numberplate.

Subaru will tell you exactly what it is supposed to be if you give them the VIN number.

The "T" plate could have been someone's private plate I'm guessing.

car was registered 28 June 2000 with reg num T625 ***

Private plate was put on 28 June 2000 with reg num T****** which is still on it.

Data check comes back as a 2 door P1 registered 2000

The build number is not even an early one of the first 500. Its in the 300's

the "T" plate it refers to,is it not the previous car that the private plate was allocated to?

T Plated cars were registered between 01 March 1999 and 31 July 1999 ..... which seems too early for a P1

There is something odd .... maybe it was pre-registered as one of the first and used as a demo vehicle by Subaru UK themselves?

If its any help though, the applied model code for a P1 is: GC8HKED

The code for an RB5 is: GC8GK8D

I'm not 100% sure myself but the below list was published on WRX.com and iwoc.co.uk

Applied Model Code (UK)
GC8EK8D = Turbo 4 door
GC8EKFJ = Sport 4 door
GF8EKFJ = Sport 5 door
GC8EK8D = Catalunya
GC8FK8D = Turbo 4 door
GF8FK8D = Turbo 5 door
GC8GK8D = RB5
GC8HK8D = Turbo 4 door
GC8HKED = P1
GDABK8D = WRX
GDBBKKH = WRX STi Prodrive
GDBCKEH = WRX STi

Plus if you type that code in google, it brings up discussions about the RB5

theres loads of P1's up for sale to choose from. Personally id choose another one. Something just dosnt add up with the one you HPI'd.

don't know about the 1999 P1 part, but it could be that the cherished T plate was on a RB5 before it got put onto the P1? that would explain the HPi thing - especially if the HPi was only linking the T plate to the RB5 (not the VIN number)

Keep digging and if only 1 owner, ask?
