Hi mate
Best mod in my eyes are...
Decat or sports cat for the exhaust.
Good panel air filter (K&N) or (Green Cotton).
Larger fuel pump.
RE map.
Then your talking real rocket ship

Hey mate i think you should start off with an induction kit maby HKS or something similar, then a full stainless exhaust from the manifold back and a remap. Thats where i would start if i was you. should add about 30+hp and make it sound lyk the dogs bollox. After that you may want to look into upgrading the internals before you start on uping the power by much more or you could end up melting something. Keep her well serviced mate and let the turbo warm up/cool down before you go caining the ***** off it and you shouldnt have much bother. Happy driving

Sounds like you have bought a standard STi. The standard cars do feel a little lack lusture in the power department. Shame you didn't get one with the PPP kit, as this would have given you the flat 4 burble and the power. But as echoed on here your best bet is to get some mods on the car and go for a remap, and get more power and enjoyment.

Be careful of boost spikes if you fully decat it.

A remap is essential

265bhp in standard trim. do a full exhaust system, a panel filter and a remap and you'll be seeing around 315/320bhp quite comfortably.

PPP exhaust is a little timid, plus there is more sound proofing in the newage cars. I was disappointed until I heard someone else driving mine past. You can replace the mid (resonated) section with a straight through pipe, gives a bit more volume.

With the sports cat you should be able to get 330/330 with just a re-map, though IIRC you may need to upgrade the fuel pump on the 02 version??? Check with JollyGreenMonster, he gives good and realistic advice.

You dont need an induction kit on these, a good panel filter will suffice as the standard induction is very good so stick with a good make uprated filter, then an exhaust (if you can get a PPP sports cat it makes MOT's easier) and remap at the same time as it has already been said that they do boost spike if you mess around with them too much and engines are not cheap to rebuild.
Also look at changing the pads as the standard ones can feel a little wooden tbh, but your looking at around 330-350bhp and you will need an uprated fuel pump on an 02 plate STI.

The standard internals on a new age STI are more than capable of running 400+bhp, and the only way you will melt anything is if you mod and dont remap (though the addition of a knock sensor like a KS3 or 4 is advisable on a modified car )

Yes, it would need to be driven off boost until mapped as it could boost spike dangerously.

Where the boost goes way over what it is designed by the factory to do. It will do this when there is less back pressure in the exhaust when a decat is done as the turbo spools so much more quickly. The std map from Subaru tries to bring the boost up to this level smoothly, when decatted it will shoot up to this level and probably beyond before the ecu has time to react to it and slow things down to bring it to the target boost pressure. This is easily sorted in a mapping session but left to do it's own thing it could be very dangerous to the engine as well as feeling jerky.

Theres plenty of decent mappers about...

Andy Forrest
JGM
Bob Rawle
Pat Hepburn
Steve Simspon

...are a few which I know of. Best to ring up a specialist/mapper and discuss your wishes with them.

A mate of mine on here, 'Dunx', has an 02STi he boguht from new. Currently running circa 400/400 on the standard internals comfortably, so ignore the rubbish from folk which do not know Also look at the suspension and brakes side of things. A fast car is great, but a fast car that does corners quickly and stops quicker is better

Hello and welcome mate.
Good choice in car too.

If you need any ideas feel free to look at the mods on my car. The engines on these are very good.

My moto is if you take care of the car it will take care of you.

Can anyone explain if / why it would be necessary to fit both a FPR and higher capacity injectors to achieve ~400bhp / 400lbft on a 2002 STI?

Thanks, Mark

Injectors are definitely needed (unless you plan to run it very lean).

Adding an adjustable FPR helps as you can increase the fuel pressure to get better atomisation of the fuel from the larger (or modified) injectors and better idling. The std FPR has been known to fail too so it is a precaution.

A lot mate. Not a much a most on here but enough.

Adding a set of 800cc injectors soon (once I pull my finger out) and adding a Prodrive bumper with modded fog lamp covers for CIAK.

Still running a STi TMIC and she's making a healthy 402bhp & 360lbft but will see what the 800cc injectors do.

To be honest I'm pretty much at the end scale with the current set up and the engine won't go anymore after the 800cc and map is done but will be a awsome car once done.

I would if it was me if your car is still in factory spec do this.

Rear ARB and drop links
Good panel filter
Don't add a BOV or VTA
Make sure you use a good fuel every fill up TESCO 99 or Shell V Power
Good set of pads and discs
if keeping the 2.5 bore exhaust change the short section and mid to non resonated
Then if money allows, speak to JGM for a remap.

It's horses for courses mate. Most of all enjoy your new pride and joy.
Your find that each step you take with mods becomes more exspensive etc.

Steve
