Yep, colder, denser air equals greater mass air flow and more power.

This is the reasoning behind the throttle body coolant delete mod, and the inlet manifold insulator mod, to try to keep the charge air as cool as poss during the summer.

Yup, seems to be using a little less fuel this past week or so, instead of the usual 300 to a tankful I'm getting 330 or thereabouts instead

it sounds stupid but looks to me im using less boost to accelerate a bit quicker than normal. only tiny bit though. not had chance to give it a belt but looking forward to see how she is in this weather

Yep I was thinking the same on the way back from work today, it felt like the turbo was spooling up quicker

How come yours is using less fuel? Mine seems to use a little more during the winter, surely the cooler/denser the air, the ECU adjusts the fuel mixture accordingly i.e. adding more fuel?

I'm no expert, so could be wrong, but that’s what I thought happens?

tbh I'm not sure, but at a guess I would say that if the engine is capable of making more power than normal given the denser air perhaps it then uses less fuel to do the same work, so if my driving style (dictated by traffic mostly) is the same then thats maybe why it uses less fuel

I do agree with you about colder air = more fuel though, or at least thats what I thought happened - it could be simply that it advances the ignition a bit more as its less prone to knock with colder air (hence the use of FMIC's for high boost applications to keep charge temps as low as possible) - I'm not an expert either tho, but I'm sure one will be along soon

I was a bit worried that it was running lean, and if I hadn't changed the fuel pump for a 255 unit then I would start suspecting fuel pressure drop etc. but it seems to be running fine.

I'm changing the battery in the next couple of months as its getting hard to start sometimes, so I'll reset the ECU at the same time and see if that makes a difference

No that sounds about right to me. I always find that the colder winter months means less miles to a tank of petrol.

The only trouble is, that in cold weather, the engine sounds a bit more like a bag of nails when you start first thing in the morning!

Yep, find mine is noticeably faster as the temps drop below 10 degrees C but I run into fuel cut just below 0. At least I did last year on an unmodified car. Now have DIY Prodrive fit, see what happens this year.

And yes, my MY97 slaps anyway but sounds far worse on the really cold mornings. Just turn the radio up LOL
