Advice buying Block from USA - UK import charges???
Guys,
Just joined scoobnet,
Wonder if anyone from the UK has bought a Block from the US?
Im looking for some info on UPS import fees or Duty charges to get the block shipped over.
Company in USA can supply me the following for $2882 USD -
2.0l WRX STG II shortblock - SF series
Manley 8.5:1 pistons
Manley H beam rods
Manley .020" over pistons
New crankshaft with cosworth bearings
UPS shipping is around $400
But before I proceed with the order I need to know if there will be any "Additional" charges should I expect to pay,
I've heard that there will be an import charge somewhere
I've also heard there will be import tax?
The block is used but the internals are new, does the import fees change depending on wheather parts are new or used?
Any advice would be much appreciated,
cheers,
Chris

IIRC charges are worked out like this:
Declared value of item plus shipping cost - $3282,
Convert to GBP (usually at poor rate) - approx £1980,
Import duty at 3.4% - £2048
VAT at 15% - £2355
So, you'll end up paying approx an additional £375 in duty etc. Doesn't matter if goods are new or used.
HTH,
Neil

The seller pays for shipping the engine from his house to the UK port of entry unless he has paid the extra for shipping to your home from the port of entry. Don't forget to add the cost of then transporting your engine (via whichever carrier has your engine in their bond) to your home.

Advice buying Block from USA - UK import charges???
Thanks for the info guys,
I've had an email back from the seller who says they can do the customs invoice at 1/2 the value of the block,
As long as the block doesnt get lost this should be OK
What do u think?
Anyone see any problems with this?
cheers,
Chris

UK Customs are fairly savvy. They have the right to charge you more if they think the value of the goods sent is a lot more than the value the sender has declared. Putting 1/2 the value on the block might get you through in which case job done but there is always the possibility it might go the other way.
You have nothing to lose!!
