Default Best roads near you......name and shame!

There are lots of good roads out there not necessarily in the peak district Wales etc.. because some of us are not lucky enough to live there....

I live in Reading and my favorite road is one called "Berrys lane" in Burghfield leading into "Kirtons farm rd" its not amazing but its being re surfaced there is usually some graval/stone on some corners (which there a few) to keep you on you toes. At the end/start there is a very long straight nice and open with a good clear view of the other end. Its a very quiet road especaly late/early the only thing because its a bit out is the wild life.

The Snake is limited to 50mph and heavily policed these days, although very early on they aren't about much. Better than Snake is the Strines Moor road from Ladybower to Midhopestones... CLICKY. Woodhead Pass A628 is also good, but turn off onto the A6024 to Holmfirth for a run over Holme Moss : Coming back down is a real tester for the brakes if you gun it Of course, the A537 Cat'n'Fiddle and nearby A54 is awesome. Again, spoilt by over-zealous policing which now includes induction loops which report to a traffic monitoring centre which can direct patrols to areas of concern

Closer to home for me is the brilliant Ribblehead, Buttertubs, Greenhow Hill, Bolton Abbey to Aysgarth and West Witton to Kettlewell.

Don't get me started on the Lake District

get a few added to this site. Looks like it could be a really good reference site if it got some decent information on it.

Living inside the M25 there aren't too many nearby. However, a few roads off the A5 near markygate are good fun. National speed limit so no need to risk points having a good drive!

Again, not many near South East London, so tend to head to Kent/Surrey. The road between Tunbridge Wells and East Grinstead (A264) is pretty good, that's still 45 mins drive away though!

from: tunbridge wells to: east grinstead - Google Maps

Any others in the area? Or maybe in Essex, just off the M11, London side of Stansted?

Almost the whole of Devon and Cornwall is worthy of praise, but I particularly enjoy the A388 around Holsworthy, and the A39 Atlantic Highway south from Bude.

A39 Atlantic Highway

A388

As I say, most of the A-roads down there are great, B-roads can be lots of fun, but much slower due to the inherent danger.

I live almost on the cat and fiddle road, its a good place to live!

Next year its getting 7 cameras and a dedicated patrol of 5 chase cars and 5 police bikes, one of which is meant to be the new ducati just in case a biker fancies doing one. The cops are being trained for it now, it was in the local rag a few weeks ago!

The camera thing is an ****, theres nothing better than a blast down that road at 2 in the morning, its unlikely you will see another car then, and if you drive down it rather than up it, you can see the headlights of another vehicle miles before it gets near, so safety isnt a massive issue!

The speed limit is now 50 instead of 60, and the dedicated patrol WILL have targets, so be prepared for being done for boderline stuff that would be ok on another road (i mean doing 53 in a 50 WILL result in a fine and points, despite 10% + 2mph rule, the ***** have to justify their existence some how)

Isn't the 13 bends of death up Caversham way somewhere??? can't remember exactly where though.

The road from caversham to Benson and on to M&P is pretty good to tickle the old accelerator! Well it is if you have German number plates anyway

The A386 from Plymouth to Bideford, the south bit out of Plymouth is a bit busy and there is a speed camera at one of the villages around Roborough (i think its called) but once past Tavistock and onto the moors its all good clean fun, just a bit busy with tourists and wildlife!

There're lots over here wi no cameras but pretty well policed. Just have to be careful

Still like the A66 to be honest as it was my very first 'driving test' road

Indeed. Thanks for that. They're both a bit far from me as I'm the other side of Devon but will bear it in mind.

That's a bit closer to me, might try that next time I'm down plymouth way and cut off towards exeter/newton.

I'm in france at the moment and the roads would be great if the surfaces weren't so ****
