Default need help with my engine

i was driving back to Norwich ok but about 10miles before I got home I've started to get a weird knocking noise. just after changing gears and putting the throttle down there was like something was rattling inside the car that was the first noise. just as I got to the last traffic lights before me house the whole car starts to vibrate and it sounds like the engine is moving alot and the engine light started flashing. I got home and parked up and lifted the bonnet and I could see the engine was moving from side to side on idle and when I pulled the throttle cable it looked like the engine wanted to come out of the engine bay plus the gear **** is shaking like mad when on idle. do you have any ideas what this could be as I don't know if 1 of the engine mounts have broken or I have piston slap or my bottom end is going have you got and advice.

About the one thing we could rule out at this stage is piston slap. It might possibly be a complete failure of the engine mounting system but that isn't particularly likely. Unfortunately it sounds more like a rod has gone or a major crank/bearing failure. Could be a disintegrated clutch, jumped timing belt teeth (with secondary impact damage), shattered flywheel or, indeed, a number of other things tho. Does the vibration stop or change at all if you depress the clutch, incidentally?

The only advice to give you at this point in time is not to start the engine again, until you've spoken to your nearest Subaru dealer or specialist about them taking a look at it.

is there anyway of findout if it is the crank or bearing failure? i've just checked and when i hold the clutch down the car still shakes and it sounds slightly like a tractor.

It might be neither of the above, but whatever the cause, the only way to be sure, and to put it right, is by putting the car in front of someone who knows what they are doing and paying them (unless you're confident and experienced enough to do the job yourself). Sure, you could post us up a recording of the noise, but all you'd be doing is enabling us to make a slightly more educated guess.

It wouldn't change the fact that your car needs to be examined and fixed by someone who has their head under the bonnet, and worse, every time you start it you are likely to be exacerbating the damage.

The only use Scoobynet is to you at this point is to ask for the location of a good dealer or specialist in your area. Anything else, unfortunately, is delaying you getting your car fixed.

Bear - unless you have already made the recording mate, save yourself the hassle and your (probably damaged) engine the unnecessary revolutions.

It isn't going to save the specialist any time, because no matter what you do on here from this point forward, whoever you take it to will listen and look at the car and work out what's wrong with it themselves. They won't give a flyer what people on an internet forum might say in response to a grainy mobile phone video when they've got the car in front of them!

right i've just taking it to subaru and the parts manager had a look at it and he doesn't beliveve the bottom end has gone as he said you would hear it. it sounds and looks like a coil pack has failed or one of the injectors has failed but he can't book me in till september for the mian technician to have a look at it. will he was looking at and he put the throttle down slighty white smoke came out the back so can anyone confirm what he said? the main reason i am asking is because i do have warrenty for this car but it runs out in 2 weeks

He's in a better position than any of us to make a call on it as he's actually seen the car, but the only way to be sure is to get someone firstly to plug it into a Select Monitor (if it's injector or coil, it should be obvious from the error codes), and, if that isn't conclusive, to start taking it to pieces until the problem is identified.

it sounds and looks like a coil pack has failed or one of the injectors has failed
I can't immediately see how either of these would cause the exact symptoms you're reporting, but again, we're all effectively in the dark because we can't see or hear the car direct. You can take videos all day but the microphone changes the sound and it it also obviously impossible to localise where noise(s) are coming from. There's no substitute for standing in front of the thing.

will he was looking at and he put the throttle down slighty white smoke came out the back so can anyone confirm what he said?
White smoke could be oil, could be steam - and could have been something your car was doing before this problem reared its head and thus not directly associated with it. We can't tell. Despite what the parts guy says suspicion still points at a mechanical problem inside the engine but all we can do is take very rough guesses.

the main reason i am asking is because i do have warrenty for this car but it runs out in 2 weeks
September starts Tuesday after next, but that should be a moot point as far as your warranty is concerned, as you had the problem last night. Is the warranty supplied by the dealer you went to today, or is it one you bought independently? If the latter, phone 'em up and tell them you may be making a claim subsequent to a failure yesterday, pending the car being booked in and checked out properly.

As you say its under warranty for 2 weeks so get it fixed under the warranty now, before it runs out.

well thats the prob it's with a company called auto protect and i bought the car from a dealer called auto devition and they said they will take the car in next thursday but they would rather me go to a specialist and then refer it back to them so they can then tell auto protect. as my gear box went a few months ago and the car had only hit 39k miles and they said it's wear and tear but it was the 3rd 4th 5th and 6th selecta forks. so i'm in a muddle

Sounds a bit of a messy situation. On the one hand getting a Subaru specialist or main dealer to fix your car is a good thing, but on the other you need to make sure your warranty provider will cover it. Relying on Auto Devition's word is not good enough.

Get an acknowledgement, in writing and dated, from Auto Devition that they are aware that the car has suffered an apparent failure on the 20th August (or whenever). Then contact the warranty provider yourself and again get a written confirmation of their awareness of this situation, and ask them what they'd prefer you to do as far as examination and corrective work is concerned.
