Default Do you like your sti's 6 spd box?

Hello all,

Had noted that some peeps that have driven newage Sti's have found the ratios to be a bit busy. What do you think?

Love mine, although 4th needs to be a bit longer when doing a 1/4 mile sprint. As i cross the line, the rpm needle is at 7000rpm

I personally find them to be a bit on the short side, don't wish i had a 5 speeder though just maybe a bit longer ratio between 2-3 3-4, if your on a cross country blat your forever swapping cogs

Mine's fine and it also revs to 7800 rpm, which is plenty in third....

I would like a lower fifth gear as it does slow a smidge on upshift....

Or another 100 bhp !

LOL

Hawkeye 6 spds have different ratios that suit the engine.

I liked my WRX 5 Spd and I like my STi 6Spd, but love my '95 STi 5 Spd for the Shorter ratios, muchous fun !

Only criticism of the MY03 5Spd was 5th which wasn't long enough.
6Spd in the 2.5 is a good box 6th cruises nicely although where as 3rd is fundamental in the 5Spd for power and fun, it's a mere polite introduction to 4th in the 6Spd.

Love my 6 speed on the whole but would prefer a slightly longer 6th for motorway cruising. May consider swapping the JDM 6th for a UK one, as it is slightly longer.

I had a 95 STI RA box, very short ratios which I love. Now got a 6 speed with UK gears and 1-5 are almost the same as my previous 5 speed - with a bonus 6th gear for motorways. Perfect IMO!

None from me - its the box on 01-05 STis that seem to get criticism for being a bit short.

6 speed STI box is a good box. It is improved further with a remap as you don't even need to change down from 5th or 6th for the car to start pulling again at higher speeds and with the 2.5 engine turbo lag is virtually zero throughout.

Does the JDM Spec C blobeye have shorter gears than other STIs ? JDM or Euro ?

I thought mine was too short in 6th, but looking at 60@2500, 70@3000, 80@3500 does that imply 170mph@8000 ? (assuming no increase in drag).

The UK box has a longer 5th and 6th, mine at 70mph shows 3200rpm (reading taken fom the avcr rev counter over reads by 200rpm) on a JDM box.

I love 1-4, but 5th is too long on my MY03 STi. So the jump from 4-5 hurts acceleration big time. 6th is great though. So really I'd just prefer a shorter 5th.

Iv just recently fitted an 04 UK 6 speed box to my RB5 and i really like it, 1st to 5th are very close, 1st is like....just gone straight away but i agree with Banny, 6th seems a little short, not even much longer than my old 5th was, mite look into the JDM 6th as an option, has anyone tried this option??

I,ve got used to mine now but i would rather have a 5 speed with longer legs, most fast bends seem to have it hanging in 4th at 6-7k revs or bogging in 5th, you might as well forget 2nd and i cant remember the last bend i attacked in 3rd , it just seems to me not many bends allow you to power through without needing to change gear mid corner (super no no) so for me longer legs would be nice.

It's fine with daily driving IMO. But have to agree with certain members about 4th needing a slightly better ratio in terms of road speed. The jump from 4th to 5th can really hurt your 1/4 mile times. I went to the pod on the 2nd for the USC event. Hit 8k in 4th crossing the line (needless to say fuel cut at 8k or so) but lost about 0.4 secs on other runs changing to 5th.
Got a vid here
YouTube - Wrx Sti runs 12.8 1/4 mile
You can hear the rev limit indictaor that i set at 7k kick in well short of the line.
Anyone else having this porblem?

Thats still a good time though. ^
Thats one thing I like about the wrx. Less gear changes and you only need to go from 1st-4th gear on the 1/4 mile.

Would be an 06 sti I would go for, which seems to be fine by all accounts.
