Default A bit of buying advice required

I'm currently on the lookout for an STi as I've now flogged my BM, almost every car I've looked at so far has either been crashed and repaired or had some mechanical issues.

Now I've found one that looks and sounds like a real minter, FSSH, loads of receipts etc etc but the guy I've been speaking to about it has said its his nephews car and he's just helping him sell it as he's not great at stuff like this. He has the V5 and all the paperwork etc but I was wondering if anyone had any advice about what to do in this situation (obviously I'll HPi check it, and also make sure the engine, VIN numbers all match up etc). Other than that, I'm not sure what else to check to make sure its right and that I'm not getting scammed etc...

I would personally walk away from that one matey. Why is he selling it for his Nephew?

There are plenty of nice Scoobs about. You may well find a better one for the money.

Check out the sales section of this site or try this one.

Hi Jay Bee, buying a second hand fast car is a task as they go fast and plenty crash and of course you want to determine a quality scooby prior to parting with your money... I am 40yrs old and have learnt the hard way... Here is the solution, get 'Dekra' vehicle inspection outfit that Autotrader front on their home page and spend £159.00 for a 206 point check. Mate they will find out anything not good with the car for example they will go around the car with a Micron Metre and will determine if any of the panels have been sprayed damaged etc. They will take the car on a 10 mile test drive, top and bottom money well spent. I just bought a WRX Bugeye 62,000 and had my best mate mechanic look at the car he said its beautiful, but still I got 'Dekra' in they did find issues that my mate didnt come up with, but then again its what they do... Money well spent, dont think you can determine its a good car or not, as we buy with our hearts and emotions, 'Dekra' tell you how it is and come in £100.00 cheaper than AA or RAC... Good Luck, but be sure your dream doesn't turn into a nightmere and all because she looks good dressed up...

He's helping his nephew sell it apparently cos he's rubbish at dealing with stuff like that.
Its not the road worthyness I'm concerned about, its more of the ownership side, IE The guy that is selling it doesnt own it, apparently his nephew owns it. So how do I know he's legally entitled to sell it etc etc

My old JDM is for sale by the 2nd owner, its a bit of a trip but the car has only done 6k in 2 years which is nothing really and I would haggle that price slightly, just depends on what you want? (never crashed when I had her )

She had the suspension stripped and rebuilt before going to litchfields as it was squeaking slightly (not knocking).

Unfortunately Tony, its out of my price range at the moment. I took a massive hit on the BMW (lost £12k in <3 years) and I'm also saving for a wedding.
I remember the car from when you got it though. V nice!

Heres the one in question:

CLICKY

I've told the guy I think its heavily overpriced and he wasnt unreceptive to it after told him some prices of similar stuff.

Yup that is a bit steep should be around 1-1.5k cheaper for a 7 year old car that was 26k new.
See what else I can find

By the sound of it , Id say this guy is a dealer. People who sell cars on the side just make up stories like Im selling it for a mate/relative etc.
He is also selling another car at the bottom of the advert.

It looks tidy but I think you could get a newer sti for 8k.

I've sent him a load of comparisons, similar age etc that are typically going anywhere from £6000 to £7500 (asking prices). He said that was just a price his nephew felt it was worth. I've told him that its well over priced for age and mileage, but it does look and sound like a clean one. He's sending me some more photos in a bit. He reckons its mint.
I've also sent him stuff that is a bit newer, less miles for similar money. I think if its genuinely that mint and well looked after, if I could get it down a fair chunk say £6500 - £6700 then it might be worth it, and that's give me some money to start 'tinkering' with it.

At that price though, its def a no but he did seem ok about taking a lower offer. Hadnt spotted that he might be a dealer. That'd explain the story, and also makes it a little more legit possibly. I was mainly worried about getting scammed but I suppose a part time dealer wouldnt want to register it.

That first one Tony has had quite a serious front end collision. I should have picked it up yesterday as I'd agreed a purchase price with the owner, he took it to get MOT'd and a wheel alignment done as it was pulling to the right and he took it off sale as its basically had a front end and there still damage!

The second one, I emailed him a week ago and he never got back to me.

I would ideally prefer a JDM car (and in black or white ideally) but finding one that hasnt had an accident so far has proved fruitless.

I'm also talking to the owner of this:

Subaru : Subaru Wrx Sti Prodrive Style

And this:

Subaru : 2004 Immaculate Subaru Impreza STI PPP

I dont mind travelling for the right car either.

Cheers Tony,

I'm trying to spend a little less than that really, about £8k is about as much as I want to spend at the moment if possible. Trying to leave money for mods, if its not 400+ then I wont be happy

I'll see what Pete has to say tomorrow though

That car isnt a Prodrive one anyway which makes it more overpriced
