Default Why Do People Want £1000 More Than Their Car is Worth??

I've been looking for a MY99/00 UK Turbo now for about 3 months, but the classifieds are littered with average cars overpriced by about £1000!

I wouldn't say I was being tight either(despite being Scottish ) because I'm looking for a standard car with around 60k on the clock for £4000 or there abouts, which is what I'd say it would be worth.

People seem to think a car like that would sell quickly at £5500! Seriously, what are these nutters smoking.

Small rant over...

Does anyone else find this? And don't say it works both ways, because I let go of a MY98 earlier this year with 75k on the clock for £3500, and thousands had been spent on it.

I know what you mean, Impreza values or asking prices should I say seem to have risen quite dramatically over the last few months.
I was seriously considering a move to an evo 4 with a evo 6 engine in it for about the same price as I was wanting to spend. I don't like the power delivery of an evo but I was seriously considering crossing over. Plenty of Evo 4s for £3k at the moment glad a right priced STI came along in time.

Yeah but a couple of hundred quid. I've seen loads of cars I'd be interested in, but the mental asking price just makes me think why bother when he won't come down to a reasonable level.

Have a look on pistonheads, there is one particular type r that is up fo £10k, high miles and no mods, and another one (my98) thats nothing special for £9200! If they sell for that, i'll eat my own head!

You'd kick yourself if some rich punter turned up and just paid the cash ?

The fact that you underpriced your car, doesnt mean everyone elses is overpriced, the fact that they are ALL overpriced says to me thats obviously the going rate,if you only have £4k to spend on a car, then you buy a £4k car, theres plenty about.Thats like getting miffed with all 22b owners cos they wont sell there cars for £10k cos thats what you want to buy it for,it kinda dont work like that. The appeal of the P1 you wont get until you own one,ive had 4 scoobys in the last ten years, current one being a P1,and its a totally diffrent car,and totally undervalued, but even with them, you can pick them up for £7k,or you can get a good one for £11k,or you could get mine for £15k,but i aint gonna sell you it for £4k just cos thats what you want to spend.

a car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it

with an impreza, you do get what you pay for and obviously the good ones hold their value

The thing is I have seen what I am looking for go for the price I'd expect, I just haven't been quick enough. I didn't underprice my car, I priced it to sell not collect dust for months.

I totally agree.

There are plenty of MY99 Turbos that look like mine for £2-3K. I paid more than that though because it's the car 'I' wanted. If the car you want is overpriced (to you), go and find another thats cheaper if you know theres plenty about!

If the ones you have seen get snapped up quickly, does that tell us something?

Yeah, just prob too good a price! There are some bargin classics about, but as you say THE REAL GOOD ONES just get snapped up quick. I looked for about 3 months, and found a couple of sub 50K miles cars for £4K. I missed a few good ones when looking, hang in there.

I know what you mean mate, its the same thing that happens to me every time,i get bored with the car,i start looking round, then i see something, next thing you know ive seen a car i NEED,and ive got to either trade in and get fleeced by a dealer or sell cheap to get rid quick, thats the car your after, but when youve got the dosh, those cars are never about,i only ever see cars i want when im skint. The problem with all scoobys is theres too many of them, thats why there worth nothing, which is good cos normal working folk like us can afford them, but bad because there worth nothing. Its definetley true you get what you pay for,cos theres a lot of nails about, but im sure you,ll find a good one eventually. If its any help, ive found the best way to find a car is to let it find you,my mate asked me to look for a car for him 3 weeks ago,i put a post on my local forum, and got pestered to death with offers, then you just pick what you want to look at,he came round today in his 53 plate uk STI,was for sale at £9.5k got it for £8.5k,i said clearly he wanted to spend £8k and the seller contacted me so he was obviously willing to sell cheaper than what he wanted.I think thats the way forward, and i,ll be doing it when i want my next car, rather than gettin stitched wi a dealer again

Believe it or not I actually spotted that one on Pistonheads when I was having a quick browse. At first I thought it was too good to be true, but I didn't have enough time to do anything about it anyway as I was quite busy!

Looks like a good car for someone though!

I would give you about £4k for that if you're seriously thinking about selling it. That's if it has service history, it's never been damaged and has been safely modded.
