Visiting in August for the Tattoo as 40th b'day pressie to wife.
Looking for a decent hotel within easy walking distance of the castle and any decent restuarantsthat I can book in advance.
Any recommendations please?

195 quid per night for a room, but its usually booked for months in advance.
Same goes for the restaraunt, I believe there may be at least a 3 month wait for a table at the moment
I have heard that it is one of the best places in the UK to eat though.
Andrew.

If you can't get a booking at the Witchery, you could try The Tower. It's actually on the top floor of the Royal Museum of Scotland but it's run by the guy who runs the Witchery (James Thompson). Gets good reviews. We went there at New Year - superb!
Hotel-wise you could try The Scotsman on North Bridge - new conversion of the old Scotsman newspaper offices. Again gets good reviews and is a bit different.

I am sure you will get loads of reccomendations but here is something a bit different.
There is a resturant about 50 yards from the castle entrance called the Witchery. Its intimate, spooky, classy, supplies excellent food and is fairly expensive. Supposed to be haunted and I believe has 1 or 2 rooms if you are brave enough.
It will be a very memorable meal for someone middle aged (hehehe) -Iam not far behind mate. Sriously this place is special, sorry no tel number but directory enquiries will help.
