An STi 8 engine wont have a CDB, it will have a semi closed deck block and these do not have any markings.

If your sure it was a CDB, then the doner STi 8 must have had a CDB fitted at sometime in its life.
As in reply #2, the STi Version 8 came with a semi closed deck block and the only markings your will find to ID it are the casting number's S20C.

All CDB's came with the cross hatching in the usual places.

Agree with both comments above, if it's a cdb then it should have the usual markings.

well i got the bottom end from a tuner by me and it was out of one of there sti's that they where importing at the time with only delivery miles on it,i could tell it was brand new at the time because of how clean and perfect it was,i know it was some time ago since i built it up but i'm 99.9% sure its a fully cdb,i can remember the tops of the pistons were flush to the block with 4 small half moon cut outs for the valves and the underside of the pistons as i droped one out had hatch markings on the underside, not that says anything about the block,

A open deck block can be "closed" & this company in the USA do the machining necessary.

Subaru Block machining
