closed deck block markings???????????

hi,i have fitted in my classic a sti 8 bottom end which is a closed deck one,i know on the early classics that the blocks are marked with the hatch markings behind the crank sensor etc,my bottom end does not have the hatch markings even tho it is a cdb,is it something subaru stop doing on the later engines???????

An STi 8 engine wont have a CDB, it will have a semi closed deck block and these do not have any markings.

this is why i ask,i brought the bottom end from a brand new car when it came into the country years ago because it was having a 2.5 put in it,that was back at the begining of 2004,built the engine myself and it is defo a fully closed deck block,i put my wrx heads on using cometic headgaskets, bit confused now???????????

If your sure it was a CDB, then the doner STi 8 must have had a CDB fitted at sometime in its life.
As in reply #2, the STi Version 8 came with a semi closed deck block and the only markings your will find to ID it are the casting number's S20C.

All CDB's came with the cross hatching in the usual places.

Agree with both comments above, if it's a cdb then it should have the usual markings.

Just out of interest, where are these markings on the block??

millwrx 20 June 2009 11:38 AM

well i got the bottom end from a tuner by me and it was out of one of there sti's that they where importing at the time with only delivery miles on it,i could tell it was brand new at the time because of how clean and perfect it was,i know it was some time ago since i built it up but i'm 99.9% sure its a fully cdb,i can remember the tops of the pistons were flush to the block with 4 small half moon cut outs for the valves and the underside of the pistons as i droped one out had hatch markings on the underside, not that says anything about the block,

Wouldnt worry to much as the semi cdb is good for 500 if not more

cheers simon, just that i'm sure it is,can remember thinking to myself at the time, well hopefully i wont need to strip it in the near future to find out,lol

A open deck block can be "closed" & this company in the USA do the machining necessary.
