Morning Everyone

Have been looking for a scooby for a while and have been looking at a bugeye (52 plate) with just over 100k miles.

Ive always been a worrier when it comes to mileage but this car is really tidy and does have FSH.

Am i worrying about nothing or would i just be buying trouble?

depends on how much has been replaced - bushes shocks clutch could do with a refresh maybe then that cost on top of the car price - if that makes sense

Its had clutch done recently, and serviced all fluids and filters replaced (diff oil, gear box oil, engine oil + filter, fuel filter etc.)

Shockers + Bushes would be expensive though

Maybe i should go with my first thoughts and steer clear

A high milage car would put me off i think,but it depends on how much the car is,for example if say a scooby with 100k cost £2000 with afair bit of history,new parts ie clutch,tidy bodywork etc,if a year later the engine popped,or needs a set of shocks it would make it fairly cheap motor.
You could spend £8,000 on a low milage top example or £3,000 & spend a little getting it to how you would like.

Thats what i have been thinking...

The car in question is a UK300 - so looks really nice, and is mint considering the mileage.

company floflex do good cheap uprated bushes and check to see if there is a group buy for shocks = cheap sorted motor

Cool. Ill have a look into that see how much it may cost.

That is of course if they need doing at all.

Is there anything engine wise that could go wrong at that sort of age\mileage? How long would the turbo last etc?

Sorry if this questions seem dumb but coming from a CTR im not used to having to worry about things that could break.

they seem to be pretty strong as long as been serviced and not abused just check it over real well from stone cold

I love a thread like this... My Hawkeye MY06 is now on 135500k, It pulls like the day it was new, in its life its had a few sets of tyres, a clutch, few brake pads and most importantly LOADS of services.
If you have a good service history, with newer cars the service schedule too then you should be ok. If the bills show good quality service parts or service centre and not a load of Halfords receipts the chances are they will keep going as long as you look after them.

100k is nothing on a modern car, they are built for well over double that.

I suppose it makes sense as well - just hear\read a few horror stories and tend to worry about it a bit too much.

If the car is totally standard then the mileage is a side issue ..... it will, of course, affect the price!

Pay the right price for it and with history you will have a great car ...... hopefully the last Owner has owned it since new? Or at least 2 years?

If the seller has had it less than 12 months I would walk away in all honesty.

Buy on condition - not age or mileage! At least thats what I've started to come around to. I had an MR2 turbo that was a low mileage one and it was a royal PITA as there was always something wrong with it. oh, and now I come to think about it, its not the only jap import with low miles that I've owned and has had 'issues'. Lots of owners would cause alarm bells to ring though. So long as all the service history checks out and everything has been replaced on time and by the right people I don't see what the issue is, obviously it will have some effect on the price but then that means you could be on to a winner IMO!

i,ve often thought that the interior tell alot about a car

sit in the drivers seat and just let your eyes wander around the interior

I hate my eye catching scuffs, missing trim, *** holes, etc etc etc

Isn't 100k roughly average mileage for a 7-8 year old car ?
My other half has done 80k in her 02 H6 doing the school run every day.

Should have 2 cambelt services for 100k, shouldn't it ?

Conversely lack of use also brings problems, as I needed new calipers and disks on my 99 classic with 40k miles. Pistons seized with age as I tend to brake very little.

Another vote for the 100k+ brigade.

Thats on a chocolate big end V5 STi in my case which if I'd believed half the stuff posted on here I'd have run for the hills. If its clear the car has been looked after (which this one sounds like it has) you're onto a winner. The lower value on high mileage cars makes no sense, but its a nice bonus!

I'd be more wary if it was a low mileage car.
At least with the high miles, it means the car must have been reliable and is probably used regularly. If on the other hand it only a couple of thousand on the clock, I'd be wondering why.
I'd much rather have a car thats been used enough where the oil has got up to its proper working temp.
Supposing it was only used once each day to go a mile down the road to the shops. Would you buy that car?

At the end of the day, if you're genuinely interested, find someone with a good knowledge of Imprezas to go with you. Turn up unannounced and early and listen to it from an overnight cold start. A bit of piston slap at that mileage is almost to be expected, but listen for it to quieten down as it warms.
Limited edition (and therefore expensive) versions like the UK300 would usually only be bought by enthusiasts so it should be fairly well cared for.
Is it from a dealer or private sale? TIP - If it's an ordinary car dealer, negotiate money off in lieu of a pre-sale service (I don't trust them!) then take it to a Subaru specialist.

Its a private sale so will have to arrange to go and see the car to give it a good look over.

Is piston slap a common problem? Would that cause any issues (time to use the search lol)

OK, so there will be no warrenty and sold as seen, so you need to be sure. Make sure he's happy for you to do a HPI check (even if you don't!) and try to get that Scooby "expert" to go with you. Mild piston slap should not be a problem as long as it quietens after the temp. gauge hits normal.
You obviously fancy the car so, when you run out of excuses not to buy it - hand over the cash! (Tell him that if it goes wrong, you'll send the boys round)
