It's a feature of the cars with forged pistons (e.g. classic STis, others that have their engines rebuilt etc.) and from having such cars for the past 10 years all I can say it hasn't caused any issues. I just make sure I warm the engine gently.

Don't let it worry you

I have piston slap on MY99 V5 its normal especially when cold. It usualy goes after 30 seconds or so but I always let her warm up to.

I've noticed after long runs that after taking key out and waiting for timer to stop engine i'm getting a noise but i've been told its just the noise of exhaust coolind down?

I had mine for a year a half(MY98 UK Turbo), and it slapped when cold from the day I got it until the day it was sold. Always disappeared when warm though.
