Default piston slap????

Got some piston slap on my import 97 wrx, have been told this is common on scoobies. Stops when engine is warm. Spoken to a few people and getting different answers, some say get it sorted and others saying don't worry.

Need your opinion guys!!!!

Hello

As long as you warm it up properly it shouldn't cause any problems. Mine has been slapping for about 3.5 years now.

Does the engine use oil?

If not leave it alone. As the only cure is to rebuild the engine, and piston slap on its own won't cause any real detruiment to the engine's lifespan. Using different grades of oil can mask the noise a little; Personally I've had limited sucess with this.

If the engine is using oil (say a litre every few 1000miles ); there maybe an issue with excessive bore/piston wear. So a compression test would be called for. If compression is down as well, its time for a strip down and rebuild.

Well advised Ali-B, spot on in my opinion.

Very common on 97 / 98 engine I believe.Mine has some slap when cold which this quietens right down when up to temp. Engine doesn't use any oil. Car had the slap when I bought it 4 years ago, 40000 miles later at 97000 it is no worse and runs fine.
