I need to top up the oil in MY01 WRX and on the invoice for 1k service it states Mobil 1 5/40 Fully Synthetic Oil. I can not find this oil for sale anywhere so rang the dealer. There screens say 5/40 but manuals say 10/40 which is not fully synthetic. I am waiting for them to clarify this one. I find this situation a little crazy.

Update: Dealer says that it is Mobil 1 5/40 fully synthetic which is not available in the shops only through Subaru dealer. I am checking with Mobil, but for now it's off to Subaru dealer for some very expensive oil.

I had same problem. I have the latest info on Mobil oils and Miller oils, some Mobil oils 5w-40 are only available to Subaru dealers and the problem of which to use is decided on what Subaru will accept in their warrenty.Mobil super s 10w-40 is OK for the warrenty. Mobil reccomend Mobil 1 motorsport15w/50 out of warrenty.
Hope this helps.

Question

as long as you use an oil that's fit for purpose who is going to know (from a warranty point of view)?

I always used to use Mobil 1 motorsport and get scoobysport to chuck it in.

I'm not sure (never owned a car from new) but after the 1k service the oil used is semi-synthetic then on the next oil change (7.5k) it fully synthetic - Mobil1 5w40.

Somebdy correct me if I'm wrong

You really shouldn't use fully synthetic on a new engine!!!

You need to let the engine "bed in" on the semi synth (magnatex) then switch to the mobil stuff. Please check this out as you may have engine problems down the line!!!

My dealer still wont put in Mobil 1 - reckons i can have some at my 15k service!

Jza is correct, I personally wouldn't move over to fully synthetic until the car was heading into at least the 5,000 miles area.

Then use Motul.

Mike.
