Have I done the right thing?....
Hi all,
Forgive this as a first post please....
Anyway, after an awful lot of humming and hawing I've decided to buy a Impreza 2.0 R 5dr from Motorpoint for £10.5K.
I've weighed up the pros and cons of a Cyprus import etc and it still makes sense to me, so I'm just wondering if any of you have anything else to add?
My arguments are I'll be using it for a 40ish mile cross country commute across Perthshire and Fife. and the AWD is an important consideration when the other guy doesn't get to go home until I get there. Family commitments also mean regular trips to Kintyre and the Western Isles so more winding A roads etc. In total about 18K miles a year.
Although I'm 50yo and no boy racer, I do have a history of cars that made me smile, my all time fave was my RS Escort in the early 90s. I know the
Impreza is no looker I do believe it to be a good drivers car and will be a reliable workhorse for the 5 years I intend to keep it.
OK, the wife drew the line at the WRX and the daughters were muttering about mid life crisis etc, but it still makes sense to me.
Any further advice, before I lose more the the £100 they've got just now?
Cheers,
Angus

If you like the car, then there is no reason why you should be worried. I (and many others) bought Cyprus imports and there doesn't seem to be any downsides. As long a you do keep the car for a few years and put a few miles on it, there will be very little difference in value come trade in time. Just confirm it has a full 3 year warranty (I've had no faults in 3.5 years so far, though).
At £10.5k, I think they're a bargain compared to a run of the mill Focus/Astra. The only thing you need to live with is the relatively poor mpg, but it's worth it for the 4WD and reliability. Just a shame you couldn't go for the WRX!

car's gone "bang"....
Well, had my scooby 6 weeks now and loving it so far, until yesterday...
...the wife took it to the hairdressers and on the way back something went bang and it was dead in the road. Although we've not actually received the manual etc from motorpoint as yet, a phonecall to Subaru confirmed it's on the system and they've recovered it. Being the bank holiday we're unlikely to hear anymore till Tuesday so we've little idea whats gone wrong other than its in the transmission area. We've done about 3,500 miles.
Any thoughts and suggestions asto what might have gone wrong? Will Subaru try and wiggle out of responsibility?
Any idea if we'll have any luck getting a courtesy car out of Subaru while it's getting fixed.
Any advice or guidance appreciated,
cheers,
Angus

Surprised its even on the Subaru system !!! What you might find now is the local Dealer is not interested in fixing it promptly as you chose to buy an import from a car supermarket. I can guarantee you won't get any sympathy from Motorpoint either and the chances of getting a loan car will be slim to no chance.
Good Luck

Hiya,
We picked it up end March, as far as I can tell it was manufactured in Oct08.
So, it's "new" and 2 months/3,500m since we got it, and it's been uneventful commuting & cross country driving till Saturday.
As suggested above the dealer can't find it on the system, despite the Subaru recovery folk finding it. Motorpoint are phoning us back.....
Initial examination is suggesting the gearbox and transmission have both got problems. I'll search out the other reports.
Thanks for the helpful feedback guys
Angus
PS We'll see how it pans out with regard to dealer v motorpoint help and support, our daughter bought a new Corsa from a dealer last year and had lots of hassle after her clutch disintegrated after 2 weeks, apparently it had been miss assembled .......

I think you will need the original copy invoice of when the car was sold by Subaru Cyprus to Motorpoint this is when the warranty will start not from when it was 1st registered in this country. Without this Subaru UK will not pay for any warranty repairs I suspect. When buying an import this is something I always stress to people are you saving enough money to cover any problems and messing around you will get if something goes wrong.
People like Motorpoint are killing Dealers you can hardly expect them to bend over backwards when something goes wrong, its not right really but its what happens in reality.
Hope its gets sorted quickly though.

Correct, I knew that already, but Subaru Cyprus via Motorpoint do put it on the system for you.
Anyway, the story so far (today being the first working day since it happened) is that they (Subaru Cyprus/Motorpoint) fell down on that bit, and have put their hands up to it, they are saying it'll be 5 days till it's on the system. In the meantime they've given me a loan/courtesy car ( a 06 plate Astra from the back lot - and a previous life as a smokers shelter!) and liaised with the helpful Subaru garage that's got the car and who'll hold on to it till its on the system etc.
After 50+ miles in the Astra I miss the Impreza! Notwithstanding the disappointment that something has gone seriously wrong with it!!
So, so far, both the Subaru dealer and Motorpoint (despite the hic-cup with the warranty paperwork) are both being very helpful and the loan car was offered before we got the chance to ask for it.
I'd argue that Subaru UK dealers didn't lose out as we'd have spent the same money on a Focus or some such from a dealer. In the end I've never understood UK car prices, in the 80s/90s I spent 8 years in Germany with the RAF and prices for cars and servicing bore no relation to the UK equivalents!
