BMW Alpina wanted to play
#1
Came across this left hooker Alpina earlier this evening on the Purley Way in Croydon, must admit this looked quite a serious bit of kit. Don't know much about Beemers but spotted a 4.6 badge on the bootlid!. The guy was obviously 'gagging for it' but traffic conditions and several speed cameras prevented any serious away from the lights encounters, got me thinking though, this thing might just have blown me away (Me, Sti4 Type R, no mods) Anybody know anything about these Alpinas, 0-60 etc, It looked seriously quick.Certainly made a nice change to one of the Nova brigade pulling up alongside

0-62 in 5.5 secs.
Being rear wheel drive this will depend on traction. I suspect performance to be very simular up to about 85mph with the Scoob taking an early lead. above 85mphish though the BMW should fly, 347bhp and better aerodynamics, top speed around 175mph.

Was it an M5 B10 Alpina or a M3 Alpina?
I've got a standard M5, but with some 'end-of-the-e34-M5-shape' extras like 'burg brakes roll-bar, 'burg adaptive suspension etc...
I've raced around snetterton (Fast Track) against a scoob and the M5 has more lateral grip on the big bends where I gained, but got outpaced in the first 10 - 30 meters of a straight - because you have to feed the power carefully or the back-end starts to play-away (No worries with the scoob ?). After 30 meters though, the 340bhp M5 was gaining. If it was a full-on M5 B10 (411bhp, some are 500bhp plus) it wouldn't have a problem with a scoob (Maybe apart from tracks like Oulton), especially 40mph+, though I imagine youre moment of glory would have been the first 50 meters!
I think the 0-60 is around 4.9 for the B10.

I used to have a B3 3.0 Alpina and got to know a few people with Alpinas. The left hand drive model described was the top of the line Alpina, based on the E36 3 Series. So, a 4.6 V8, in a smallish body shell would have made for an entertaining and quite swift vehicle.

My MD has a B10 4.6 V8, very nice, very quick, but not as quick as my impreza, even 40-90 onto a motorway, let alone from standstill. Auto gearbox and a lot of bulk works against it!
PaulFisher - M5 Alpina? M3 Alpina? didn't think Alpina had touched the 'M' cars since the quandt family took shareholding? IIRC the last Alpina 'M' was the E30 M3. Since then they have done specials i.e B10 bi-turbo (based on 535), but haven't been allowed to touch the sacred 'M's - apart from aesthetic 'aftermarket' modifications.

thought the 'M' series were BMW's own Motor sport section!
Alpina i thought were a seperate company to BMW that took BM's to tune themselves!!
like when Cosworth take fords to tune, cosworth is not ford!
like Williams Renaults!!! Williams do the tuning! etc etc
so u will not get a M3 Alpina, will you?

I tell you what lads, an owner of a nice one let me play with his car at Bruntinthorpe the other week in the wet and it was like this
These things need to be tamed unlike a Scooby which can make a crap driver look good, scary moment for me was when I lost the back end at 90mph and even if you floor it, makes no difference with all that Power!
I did have loads of Big afterwards, these B10 Alpina's are a force not to be reckoned with!

They sometimes use the M cars for the donor chassis suspension etc, though normally use 535i sport. The idea of using the M chasis is apparently because chasis is strengthened by M gmbh to make it stiffer, it also has different stock suspension, different brakes, rollbars, etc...
Sometimes, for a really filthy pimp car, they have converted the beloved S38B38 normally aspirated later euro E34 M5 - (SB36B38 / M1 racing engine derivative) to an M / Alpina 408BHP job:

JayDee,
It was a white one...
;-)
no (Stinking) badges, but it had a naughty exhaust, and I later saw it catching up with a standard (218bhp)WRX....
so I'm guessing it was an STI or something?
I've also only done 4 track days, and a few days on an airfield, so am not able to give most of u guys a decent comparison on a track....
I kept up with an EVO 6 the other day (Oulton) also, though it was ammusing to see the gap 'concertina' depending on wether we were on a fast bit of the circuit, or a bendy bit. I think the driver of the EVO was about as good as me, ie. average, so It was loads of fun... I let him pass me when my brakes were cooking, but the grin lasted ages....
I'm dying to have another go now I've had all the brakes done, and the engine is sorted out!
Its the giggle factor of the lateral grip of the M5 that makes me :-)
