Thanks for this great info. Now I need to know if the radio subaru connector is compatible with other replacement head units units I fancy a Pioneer AVIC HD3 but don't fancy having to mess with connecting loads of wires.

Hi Howy,
Just did this last week. It's a nightmare. The head unit end of the wiring harness is different to every other Subaru (even the 07 hawkeye!?). You need to get a combi wiring harness to link the car audio wiring and steering controls (if you have them) to your head unit. And the centre console is not a standard DIN width, the stock head unit is 1/2 an inch wider each side ( ) so you need a trim piece or a new centre console frrom Japanparts! I got the cables & trim sections from a good supplier in the UK, next day delivery, I'll PM you with the links & upload photos tomorrow of my set-up.

The trim insert goes inside the stock centre console trim. For me a single DIN slot & open pocket below works well for locating my ipod. The trim insert and wiring harness came from incartec.co.uk - your other option is here:
Factory DIN-sized dash panel - IWSTI.com: Subaru WRX STI Forums
Expensive but more tidy I guess, but every dealer I spoke to would not order this part from Subaru japan without payment upfront & none would guarantee it was the right trim piece.
I hope this helps...
