I'd like to know how the previous owner managed to fit a facelift grille to a prefacelift bonnet and bumper?

This is raj18-432's first post and he is asking for information about his new car.
The first response makes comments about the grill but does not go on to explain these. We are not all Subaru Impreza experts and instantly recognise something that may be non-standard. Perhaps a further explanation might have been more helpful ?
As for the second post ??? What is it you don't like. To just post a omg smilie is a bit 'off' to say the least, again , an explanation would help.

It would be nice if we could all be a little more helpful first and critical second.

Just my thoughts, and I think the car looks OK.

Cheers

Raj mate, would'nt it have been best to make enquires before you bought the car. Look if it has no or little history, thats not too much of a problem, if it has had only a couple of owners and owned for a decent length of time by each. Also please dont get sucked in by all the doom and gloom people on here, about how weak the gearboxes/engines are, it's rubbish. I have bought loads of scoobys with no/very little and loads of history and never ever had a problem with any of them. By the way, black is a cracking colour on a classic. It looks nice mate, enjoy and welcome.

Firstly thanks for that guys, I really appreciate all the comments and support. I must admit, I never thought that this thread would get so much attention.

O yea I didn’t notice the grill, but now you mention it, ‘wow’ that’s quite cool. lol

OK History about the car. To cut a long story short I brought the car from a friend of mine, he’s had it for a year or so. The owner who had it before him was a girl, so he tells me, and she’s owned the car twice. She was the one that had all the work carried out but when she sold the car the first time, the guys who she sold it to lost all the paper work.

The work that has been carried out includes an up rated clutch (greedy or something) custom exhaust, up rated fuel pump and a few other bits and pieces so that its pushing out about 300bhp.

Anyway here is where the problem starts, this was my m8’s second car and he didn’t use it much. Basically it’s been sitting on his drive for the last 6 months. When I got it off my m8 he told me that the ‘check engine’ light comes on and off, depending on the cars mood but recently its been on most of the time. A garage told him that it could be a sensor or something.

Anyway after I got it from him I took it to a local specialist. On the way to the garage the ‘check engine’ light went off so I though I would give it a quick burst just to see what it was like. As soon as I did that the car started making funny noises, and it was not idling properly. It was all over the place. When i got it to the garage, the guys was shocked at the noise that it was making, he opened the bonnet and saw the crank pulley not moving. So he said that he would have to have a proper look to see what has happened and the extent of the damage.

I’m awaiting what he says now, so does any1 have any further advice for me.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news although i'm sure your probably thinking it anyway as it seems fairly clear.
I've got a feeling that you may be on the verge of an engine rebuild, if the crank pully isnt moving it sounds like it's seized up to me

Apparently the cam belt has fallen off the pulley or something. I’m going to find out in detail the extent of the damage tomorrow. Just wish me luck!

If its a rebuild (what bad luck mate) - on the flip side thought ya motor can come back stronger and even better

Just make sure you get the work carried out by a specialist (eg: API) rather than some back street garage, it could cost you more in the long run.

Best of luck....and welcome to SN!

Nice looking car mate, welcome to the club..... bummer about the engine fella...... Been there done that and it was good fun, engine failure, although expensive can be an experience and a laugh

to be fair if the Crank pulley isn't moving a slipped cam belt won't be the cause, the crank pulley drives the cam pulley thus, if the crank aint turning what the hell is making a knocking noise, the car can't move if the crank isn't moving, nothing in the engine will move because everything is driven from the crank :S

AND if the Cambelt had slipped off it is pretty safe to say it will be a top end rebuild at the very least (provided your mechanic) if the crank was moving and the cams weren't!

Good lucky buddy, hope it all works out.... And as someone else pointed out, everyone seceretly wants there engine to pop so they can build a monster

Once again thanks guys,

One more question, how much is an engine rebuild likely to cost and is it worth it on this age of a car?

Its not facelift grill mate, its an aftermarket grill to fit pre-facelift cars to 'look' like facelift.

You can fit facelift grills/lights and keep the pre-facelift bonnet, as I did with my 93 wrx

rebuilds vary massively, depends what you have done and what sort of levels you wanna jump the car up to.

As stated if you like the car then it's defo worth it mate.

If it's bottom end gone it will cost you anywhere from 1K +, youcan get a 2.5bottom end for 2K and then just port everything else over

Ok guys I’ve just got back from the garage and guys told me what’s happened.

Basically the crank pulley has come off the crankshaft and with that it’s twisted the timing belts and so forth (so i have been told). It needs a new pulley and all the timing belt and stuff and apparently the idling need changing as there are worn.

So does this sound about right? U guys might have gathered by now I don’t really know much about stuff under the bonnet. So thanks for your help guys.

errmmmm surely if the cambelt is twisted, that would mean the Cams were either not turning properly or not turning at all..... this would put the valves in the wrong place at the wrong time and the pistons would surely batter them and bend them?

I'm not a mechanic and could be wrong, but I would certainly be very wary mate

Where abouts in the country are you raj18-432, as it might just be that your usual garage/mechanic is not too familiar with the Subaru engine and going to a Subaru specialist/independent outfit might save you money and time ? At least it will give you a definite answer to the problems (hopefully).

Good luck.

nice looking car, but to answer your question in regards to repair costs, I would say that the £2000 plus price tag of an engine rebuild would probably out weigh the purchase cost? my advice would be to contact a breaker such as Grade-A subaru and ask if they have a suitable replacement warranted engine. you should be able to pick up a good engine with service history for around £500 to £1000. that is the route I would go if I ever was unfortunate enough to be in the same position.

welcome to scoobynet

It looks like it's a facelift bonnet, with the pre-facelift bumper. Not the other way around...like some people seem to be thinking.
