Is driving without a tax disc illegal :o)
Brought my 1st scoobie at the weekend
the previouse owner, without informing me took the tax disc
went to the post office yesterday, the man behind the counter said he couldn't sell me a new one because the car was tax classed disabled
I have to wait for the V5 to arrive and check the status has chaned before i can now get a disc. If the status hasnt changed I have to reregister it again and wait again to get a new disc.
My poor Subaru is sitting unused
Do you think Mr Policeman will be sympathic to my plight if I drive it anyway

Yes you need to display a disk.
Last time i put in a renewal online the disk didn't turn up so i phoned and spoke to an unusually helpful chap at DVLA. He warned me that although the police can check the status electronically the offence of failure to display still stands. He also said that DVLA are pushing to have the offence removed but until then the law is the law so some police will still charge you for it

Our car is under disabled because of the mrs (hence the wagon for a wheelchair) previously i have thought on and changed the car back to PLG and then bought new tax for it at the same time when i've been selling on.
The green slip from the V5 should be fine. I don't get what the issue is.

When i bought my scooby it was classed as disabled, when i went to tax it at the post office they said there was another month on it but as when it changed hands to me the tax was void... as i wasnt disabled.
I had to pop to the local tax office (cardiff) get my new tax there, change the V5 to PLG from disabled and give them the v5 for me to get it in my name..... Give them a ring they are quite helpfull really !
As they said, i bought the car in the last week or two of the month and when i came to tax it they asked if i've used it at all as it was against the law .
I said no But still decided to tax it from the beginning of the month... hence only getting 11 and a bit months out of the tax disk !
This is the second car i've had which i've had to change from disabled to plg,tis a pain !
Get in touch with your local tax office...... Take your green slip, insurance, mot and money for tax and they'll do everything there and then !

No worries mate ..... its a shame you cant use a disabled tax disk till it runs out, but as soon as the old owner sells the car it becomes void.
Its also a pain in the ar*e that post offices cant do this service aswel, as getting to the "local" dvla center might be difficult, unless you post the stuff off to them and get it back in 2 weeks.(thats if the dvla dont bugger it up ! LOL)
