Driving on Skipton bypass last night I saw a car race up behind me at 60. He drove pretty close for a few miles and by the headlights I could tell it was a scooby so I kept to 60 as I knew there are a few Scooby cop cars. Got fed up with him so I pulled into a layby, then the blue lights came on. He pulled up beside me, asked me where I was going and ran the usual checks. Now he said he was checking as a lot of scoobs get nicked, which I'm all for, but the fact that he drove so close for quite a few miles makes me think he was trying to push me into a race. Has anyone else had a similar experience or am I just being paranoid?

Yes, and its a total disgrace.

You don't go up to someone in the street and start pushing them around in the hope that they punch you so you can prosecute or sue.

Driving close to another vehicle is wrong and has no defense. Whoever you are.

Most of the policemen I have met would never do that. I guess like everything, there are always those that give others a bad name.

Keep'em peeled.

Charlie,

I was working in Lancashire last July and I took a day off and drove up to Settle, on the way back I stopped in a layby. I went to the snack bar in the layby and when I returned to my car there was a Police scooby parked behind me. He got out and asked if it was mine and asked the usual checks then asked what I thought of them. He was an enthusiast himself, I told him he was a jammy git to have one as a cop car. He said that there's nowt gets away much these days and smiled walked back to his car and took of into the horizon. It looked very nice with all the stripes etc...
Wonder if I'll be allowed to paint mine the same.

Is'nt this called entrapment? or does the reason I thought I was going to be car jacked only work for Man U footballers?

Would be his word against mine! I wonder who the courts would believe. He did seem alright though, not a power crazed dictator, he just seemed to be a bit close.

Charlie,
I was on the dalwhinnie straight just before ingleton last june (just after skippy by pass), and pulled out to overtake a line of traffic. As we were overtaking the wife said to me did you see that blue car in the layby it looked like a camera out of the window.I said no! i didnt see it and carried on , on looking in my rear view mirror i noticed a dark blue impreza right up my ****, I thought whos this the police, anyway no lights on so ibooted it ( abit silly really), anyway he followed for about 2 miles and pulled me up.He gave me all the usual crap and then played back the video evidence of me, reaching speed in exess of 118mph.I argued by saying that he goaded me into a race and and should of pulled me straight away.To cut a long story short he did me for speeding ion the staight which was just 3 points and 40 quid fine.I was lucky.Still didnt hide the fact that the guy hounded me for 2 miles, im sure he just wanted a bit of fun as all he was used to catching was bikes.Just goes to show give a copper a scoob and he just cant help misbehaving.Saw him again about 3 months later , same copper same car , only this time he had pulled someone over at the bottom of the bypass and was out of the car,he heard me coming ,so i stopped at the roundabout and then to his frustration i nailed it of the mark (should have seen his face), i can picture it now HA HA HA!!!
Take care,
Buddy

Buddy - nice to see you back, haven't seen you on here for a while - are you going to Oulton on Saturday?

With regards this post, what would happen if you jammed on the brakes and the p*g, sorry Police Officer, ran into the back of you (hypethetically speaking of course)???

You could say that you saw something run out and had to perform and emergency stop, and this dark Scooby behind was too close and you didn't realise it was a copper as it was plain. WOnder what they would do in that situation????

Theres a green UK impreza that lives in the Leicester Area - mainly goes up and down the A47. I raced up behind him on my motorbike, and just seconds before engaging in some Scooby bating i spotted the lights on the back shelf. Would have been banned no problem - he was doing about 80 anyway!!! ******* followed my for about 15 miles to see if i'd clear off.

Youve been warned!!

I would have questioned his reasons for pulling me but as I have a smaller front number plate than is required, I didn't want to push it. He didn't mention it so I just left as soon as poss to avoid a 20 quid fine and a producer.

If he was up your **** then I think he probably was trying to goad you. If it had been me, after he was done with his checks I would have challenged him about his driving/tactics. I would also have lodged a format complaint. This seems to be increasingly common so I think that whenever this happens to anyone, the more noise you make about it (to his superiors), the more likely it is that this kind of thing will stop. If you don't get sucked in and don't get nicked, you have an even better cause for complaint as it doesn't look like you're just bitter about getting nicked.

"Real" cops wouldn't stoop to this level so you shouldn't have any reservations about shopping the ones who do!!!!

CharlieH,

I bet he was a tall skinny git as well...he did the same to me in Nov/Dec...I was round at a mates in Bradley and we went for a quick spin in the P1...as you do to show him how slow it was!!...anyway, Police Scoob was parked on the 1st Skipton roundabout, near to what was Randles...we were within the limits and he pulled straight out after us...

Exactly the same thing happened....straight up our @rse for upto the second parking space...at which point I got bored and pulled in...he followed...the blues never went on, and he said exactly the same!

Pah....moral is...just keep an eye in Skipdale ( )...we know they have at least 3 cars...

Just be careful

"Skipdale" is a nightmare on a Sunday.... They're always on the prowl between Skipton and Kirby Lonsdale...well the North Yorks border actually.

However an excellent road leaves Horton-in-Rib towards Hawes....Rarely frequented by the boys in blue....

Its an excellent technically demanding road, requires a lot of concentration to drive quickly, big ***** and even bigger brakes

Unhappy

These guys did Munna for speeding recently on that road. I wonder if they've started reading this board yet? Could be dodgy for meetings if they have!

They are a bit keen.
Skipdale force always have had quick cars. Used to be an Escort Cosworth, now a brace of marked Subarus plus an unmarked one.

The road between Skipton and Ingleton is usually so busy you can't exceed the limits anyway.

Charlie, nothing to stop you complaining about him now though? This kind of thing really pisses me off and think that we should all try and do something about it when we get the opportunity!!!!

Question

I had this happen just over a week ago. I was driving through Slough at 1:30am, perfectly legally at 30 mph when I clocked a Police car pull out of a side road behind. He then proceeded to sit about 3 feet behind in a provocative manner. At this point it was not possible to identify the vehicle as being Police and if I hadn't clocked it as Police I would probably just have dropped it into second gear and thought "let's lose this tosser before I get caught up in his next accident".

It seemed that he was deliberately trying to provoke a response. I can't work out why, because there was no way he would have seen which way I went (in his Astra) if I had responded. He said as much himself. Besides this he had already radioed a colleague because I was treated to a rolling roadblock shortly afterwards. There was no problem when I did stop, his opening line was "I bet you get really fed up with being stopped by us". A resigned "Really fed up" was my reply. All the constables were really pleasant and they performed their roadblock well without endangering me at any point.

However, you can't help but wonder what the reaction would have been if I had floored it away. I should have asked before departing but have always thought it best not to antagonise the law. I guess that the lesson to learn is to never respond to provocation without being certain who it is who is provoking you, as it now appears that aggressive driving and harrassment is not uncommon among the Police.

If the car behind is sitting too close, whether or not it is a police car just slow down gradually. I found that doing this whenever a police car was following me just after I got the Impreza resulted in them backing off, if they are trying to goad you into doing something stupid, then they are bound to have enough inteligence to see that if it is having the opposite effect, there is little point in continuing.
Maybe I was just lucky, but since the first week I have never had any problems with police cars doing that.

SCHOOLDAY FLASHBACKS AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I'll say now what I told my head teacher back in 1987.....I'm not apologising for my comments, the games teacher has no business telling me how to play football when he looks like friar tuck, and cant keep the turkish delight outa his chevy chase, the fat lardy ****er.

Not sure what relevance this has to my current reprimand but I'm sure an expulsion is in the post.....I'd better run home and make sure my mum doesnt answer the phone!

On a more serious note though darrrrlinks.

I'll admit that I'm not the police's biggest fan, for a number of reasons...heres a couple.

1. Riding my bike one sunny day, some muppet in a car pulls out and I T-Bone him, I wake up in the ambulance with the bottom half of my leg perpendicular to the top part, I'm pishing blood for days, and my converse in even more incoherent than usual (hard to believe I know). Anyway, suffice to say, the metalwork for my leg required a 6 week manufacturing period When my solicitor wrote to the police to get their report (as 6 of em attended the scene apparently)...they confirmed that they hadnt prepared a report because...get this...there were no injuries.

2. Out for a ride with my old fella one day to Matlock. There were 4 cozzers in 2 cars, and another 2 on bikes doing nothing but tugging bikers in and nailing them for small plates and loud pipes. Nice sunny day out for em.

Now, you report your car stolen and see what response you get. I rest my case.

This presumption really gets on my ****.This is the excuse the rozzers use for being able to drive however they like and get away with it.If it is to dangerous for me to drive at 120 mph how is it acceptable for a copper to catch me.Yes i realize they have a high level of training but that doesn't mean the rest of us can't drive to their standard.
Its one law for us another for them

Charlie H - have had this a couple of times myself, got 3 points about 2 years ago for similar, only I put my foot down big style(unmarked peugeot thingy about 1 foot behind me).
It's bad when they do this as it's dangerous & also very unfair. I have learnt the hard way & now if it's dark & some motor comes too close I let him pass first, take a look then drop a gear &.......well you know the rest. This is only done on the appropriate roads with the right driving conditions of course.
On the other side of the coin I posted 2 weeks ago when an unmarked pulled me on the A66, let me off with a telling off & was a great copper to be honest, I was about 20-30 over the limit as well
Lets hope theirs more like him eh??
