Hello - Going to see Scoob this Weekend. Adivce required :)
Firstly Hello!
This is my first of im sure many posts on scoobynet.
I was hoping you could all offer some advice all is welcome.
Ive been toying with the idea of getting either a wrx sti around the p reg as a track car, or a blob eye to replace my current car.
I am going to look at a potential track car this weekend, pretty new to the scoob market, and prices seem to fluctuate massivley on the older cars.
I was after some opinions on what you think of the car im going to see, and any specific points that are out of the norm which i should look for.
Right, its a 96 WRX STI, 70kmiles on the clock. Imported 5 months ago. NO SERVICE HISTORY. Warrented milage, HKS turbo timer and carbon strut brace, Version 3, in white.
Advertised at £3999 or £3500 cash.
Its Not undersealed.
Cam belt changed at 57k
Needs a service which is not to be done by the seller
What you all think. I think 70k is danger zone, especially with No service history. Because of that i dont think i would want to pay more than £3k. Am i being totally unreasonable.
I have not been to see the car yet, so lets assume for arguments sake its of average to good condition in its appearance.
All advice welcome
THanks
Chris

the guys who look after my rally car have got an Sti for sale that would make a perfect track car, its £3600 and I think its a P reg 4 door white type R A with a rebuilt Sti engine, upgraded ecu etc, goes very very well, its in Twickenahm

Close enough to twickenham.
Currently i dont want to spend more than 3k unless its a real minter.
This blokes car advertised anywhere?
Do the RA have unequal length headers? I.e. still have perfect scoob sound? And yes white is the colour im looking for.

I changed from an aftermarket HKS header setup to the stock STi ones and found the burble was much more obvious low down and mid-range
Check the gearbox as well, the earlier RA's have a close ratio box including the 5th gear so will most likely top out past 125 mph (will be close to the redline) - also put it into 5th and pull off, it should move off without any complaints.
They came in many flavours, go for the STi RA as it's the better package and will have a roof vent and the manual DCCD control + IC Waterspray. Some came with no electrics and extras while others have electrics or strangely AC.
If you plan to do long journeys and want cruising speeds then the RA is not the best choice as these cars are setup for point to point acceleration and are not designed for cruising at higher speeds but if your going to be hitting a/b roads and around town then the RA's are THE Impreza's to own - absolutely mental motors.
Head over to Type-RA.co.uk - Subaru Impreza WRX Type RA, Impreza WRX STi Type RA, Impreza Type RA V Limited, Scooby V. Ltd, visit the WRX forum & Subaru forum for more info.
To the OP, check for crash damage on the front (open the bonnet and look at the left and right side chassis arms, box shaped, should have no rust and dents or creases), check underneath for any damage and check the jack points are not trashed - I would advise spending the money and getting a full RAC or AA check done for peace of mind.

however the burble is not so obvious as on UK and WRX models due to the STi engines
my advice to the OP to wait a little while, at least until Christmas when there will be even more bargains to be had.
