Default Is a V3 STI much different to a V4 STI + Simtek ECU question

I know V3 have the older dashboard but I'm wondering if I'm that bothered about the dash. What other mechanical differences are there and specifically those that make for a better drivers car.

Also, I've look at either Power FC or Simtek ECU and would rather the Simtek because I want Anti-lag - I'll be honest, I only want anti-lag because of the noise it makes rather than any benefits it would add to the cars abilities.

Serious question this because once I sell my Jeep, I'll be on the look out for another scoob.

The V4 has the smaller vf24 turbo and the cam profile is not as aggressive. Basically lower down the sti 4 will be a more responsive but the sti 3 will be better at the top end due to the larger vf23 turbo and wilder cam profile.

However if you remap them both with the same mods there will not be much difference between them on the road, hope that helps.

Only mods I really only intend to make would be filter, exhaust and map. Possibly FMIC but nothing major.

As the V3 has a bigger turbo and agressive cam profile, is it more likely to go wrong on me?

what Banny said...

Also check the turbo as a lot have been altered due to turbo failure / upgrade.. not a major issue if getting it mapped anyway

If I had the simtek fitted to a V3 (or indeed any classic. I only want a classic and not spending any more than 4 - 5K. Can they all have anti-lag?

Nothing major, just want the pops and bangs - childish I'm sure but its what I want.

Edd, you can get that from a bit of overfueling on the overrun mapped into the car. That said, if you're getting a Simtek anyway!

Oh ok. Its jus that I was looking on JGMs site and the difference between the Simtek and PFC wasn't all that much so I thought if I did I'd probably just get the Simtek.

If I can squeeze a 1500 out of someone for my Jeep I'll be happy and can start looking for a scoob.

you can run antilag on any scoob.

the pops and bangs on overrun are nice but are not as nice as the antilag noise.. it is not true antilag as to actually get that you lose brake servo etc etc but the noise is there..

Simon,

The last scooby fitted with Antilag I stood next to nearly gave me a coronary!!

It's probably more fun from inside the car!!

My brother has a STi 4, he was looking at either a STi 3 or 4 the same as you, but there wasnt much difference in price, some V3 STi where more expensive then the STi 4, in the end he picked up a black STi 4 wagon from a import centre for £4.5k.

Also I love the sound of Anti Lag, had it on my old Evo VI, would love to get it on my STi.

If you have anti lag fitted with the simtek can it be turned on and off or is it constantly on?

depends mine is a v3 with a v4 engine apparently. but when it was rebuilt the tuner said it had the better cams ie more aggressive and stronger i think but i dont know the difference and its hard to know whats really in there until you split the engine as v3/4 has a vauge change over point and it depends when it was manufactured. and apperently the sti's are always a year ahead..why i dont know.. but its what ive been told by others who claim to know but im sure someone will know better

V3 has the wild cams and big turbo, V4 is more civilised to drive.
My V3, standard except for decat and k&n, ran 326 bhp at 7,500 rpm at a scooby rr day and we had a few standard and ppp'd STi9's as good benchmarks (they ran between 290 to 310 bhp).
