Think smaller sprocket on the front of your pushbike...

In practical terms it means the drop in revs when you change gear is smaller than with a standard gearbox. This allows the vehicle to be kept at the revs where maximum power is available more easily. The flipside is that top speed will be limited, although this can be offset with a long 1st gear.
Rally cars and motocross bikes use this kind of gearbox.

Short refers principally to the final drive (hence the sprocket analogy). If you have a small drop in revs between gear changes then you have close ratio gears.

http://http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/T...gearratios.htm

I appear to be too clueless to get this address up right, but I expect you can figure it out.
