Audi TT or STi?
#1
Honest opinons please - what d'you think about the new 3.2 V6 TT 250bhp, 4 wheel drive of course, lowered suspension as standard, uprated brakes and 18" wheels? Does this offer a better alternative to the STi which would be much more money to run / insure?

Mores the point is what are your priorities?
I just did some miles in both cars (note: in Japan & the TT was a quattro/225), and can tell you they both are good motors.
The STi is much more useful with the rear seats and good boot, the TT has a nice interior and has design/looks points. The driving positions are very different, as is the view of the outside world.
On the driving side the STi, IMHO, knocks the TT off pretty early in the game, with a good ride/handling balance (taughter than the TT), and Suby poise that the TT cannot match.
I did not like the braking from high speed of the TT (the rear got VERY light and hopped about) - and I suspect a heavier front end will not help. The new 6 speeder better be good, coz the Suby's is a cracker, and the throws on the current Audi box are loooong.
All IMHO with all the usual caveats And note, no comments on speed due to the inevitable UK version vs. JDM differences

Can only concur with the above...
Driving position on TT very compromised by the design - well it's all very cramped really...
Both good fun to drive, but Scoob has it when it gets very spirited. It also inspires confidence and oozes its ability more.
Lovely, well built car car the TT - esp for the missus

J Bee,
definately the STi type UK its only 27.5k for the prodrive version it comes with 265ps (261/2bhp) as standard, 13inch brakes on the front, 12 inch brakes on the rear! has grip from hell and is better build quality than impreza's of old.
Its more practical and service intervals are going to be at 10k (compared to the TT's variable servicing) so your not going to loose much there. Its an all round better car and more practical (and quicker ) than the TT so its the best compromise of both and with a performance pack coming out for it soon you will still retain your warranty where as VAG are now cracking down on people who chip their TT's and are invalidating their warranties!

STi - but I'm sure you'd get a different response if you posted this on the TT Forum
According to March Evo "The rumoured 3.2 Litre V6 is unlikely to be made now that the cheaper turbocharged four has shown it can produce a reliable 245 BHP" - dunno if this is correct?
Cheers,
Ian.

Don't forget the TT is simply a chipped Golf in a tarts dress - I cannot even see a comparison - and yes I have driven the TT - thought it was pretty rubbish really - and yes I do have an STi

I agree with Trout, Golf in a party frock. Visibility through the post box windows looks iffy. Also the Haldex clutch principle of the VAG group cars is not TRUE 4 wheel drive or All wheel drive, just front wheel drive with occasional power going to the rear wheels. I know I am biased but my money would go towards a STi, much better drivers car. TT's are now as common as muck too especially in silver Saw an Sti in WR blue the other day in the showroom. Awesome in the flesh

JBee,
Get the STi and save £4.5k, post piccies on Members Gallery and we will all be viewing and posting comments. General public will rubber neck you from roads and pavements for years to come.
Get the TT and ......... sorry, dropped off.

Surely the Sti! From the design point of view I must remind of the low center of gravity and the transmission of power to AWD because of that... stability...
I know that is part of marketing talk but hey, they are right. Subaru has the only right design aproach!

Thing the new TT has only 240bhp and not 250, unless autocar have got it wrong again!
Different groupings really, for different reasons as all previously mentioned. Prioritise and choose (STi)

TT, isn't that a VW beetle sport. They look very similar.
On a serious note, TT is not Japanese. Topgear and the like bang on about how great the build quality is on these german cars, rubbish, you can't beat Japanese M8. One of our MD's has a TT, silver one (do they do any other colour?) and he hates it, he pulls in to the car park and bumps post deliberately cause he hates it so much.

STI - nice car
TT - nice perm
Any fool can see that the STI is the better all round car in terms of performance, practicality, running costs, purchase price, exclusivity, wow factor styling (the TT's pretty, the STI means business).
I'm surprised you even needed to ask the question.

Just caught up on this thread.
It's interesting that J Bee, the original poster, was asking for genuine opinions and you all quickly turned it into a good old slagging session despite the fact you have never owned a TT.
There's not much to choose between a standard MY02 WRX and 225TT Coupe in terms of performance.
There are good reasons for wanting to own both.
J Bee, if you want a genuine opinion, email me. I dare put it on here less I get shot down in flames.

Haven't owned a TT but have driven one - is just the same as all the other higher performance Audis - beautifully built, great to live with, dull to drive.
Why not buy an 01 WRX and a bike engined caterham with the change
