Question Fuel Economy

Hi everyone, I'm thinking about buying my first scooby.
I'm looking at getting a standard WRX STI Jap import. My questions.......
What is a realistic MPG for this model, I wont be thrashing it all the time.
Is there anything I should look at closely.
Also, who's best for insurance, I've tried Confused and the best quote was £550.

Almost forgot, can these be re-mapped to run on super u/l ?

Thanks folks

Hi and welcome

Your mpg will probably be low 20s. Someone with a jap STI will be able to advise better.

Sounds like a good quote (without knowing details that is). Try A-Plan and Keith Michaels as well, they're popular on here.

If the car has already been registered and used in the UK I'd expect it to have a UK fuel map already. If its a fresh import you can get it done.

The search function at the top of the page is pretty good and you'll find answers to a lot of your questions

Hi Big Al,

I had an 03 jdm STi last year, mapped to 350bhp and consistently got around 200 miles to a full tank, around £60 to fill up, various driving styles. As for insurance, I was with A-Plan with the jdm and still am now with my UK STi, paying around £550, fully comp with £250 excess, no tracking device required.

JDM car must have full history and ideally the Japanese auction certificate which states what grade the was at the time of the auction. It will also need to be undersealed here in the UK. Fuels I use are only Tesco 99 or Shell V Power.

Thanks guys, I had a Nissan Pulsar about 18 months ago (280 bhp ish) and I was using Shell V Power @86 p a litre and spending on average £25 - £30 a week. This amount would last me about 110 -120 miles.
I expect a Scooby should be around the same.
I'll check out Keith Michaels as I'm with them now, and they insured my Pulsar (£395 f/c).

Keep the revs down and it does make a huge difference. I do a lot of motorway driving and if I can keep the revs below 3000 at 70'ish I can get 30 mpg. Not easy to do and very dull though. Similarly around town avoiding hard acceleration and driving smoothly is much more fuel efficient. It does then become a bit depressing when you get bored and decide to give it some beans and you can see the fuel gauge drop before your eyes.

when i had my 03 Spec-C if i drove like miss daisy i could get 170 miles out of a 50 litre tank. I had to sell it after 2 months ownership as was filling up every 4 days!

i heard that after a remap for UK fuels i would of got better MPG, but some agreed with this, some didnt.

having said all that, i am looking for a JDM bugeye STI, but its gonna be a 2nd car/weekend toy, so not worried about the stupid amount of fuel they use!!

Oh, and i couldnt manage 4 laps of the Ring on a full tank, got a bit low after 3 and a half!! lol

majority of it is local stuff and you cant drive fast around the roads i live so no point booting it
i once got 340 from a tank when driving to cardiff and back, only problem is that its 95 miles until you get to the motorway at exeter from where i live in cornwall and the majority of the A30 is dual carriagway but very hilly
motorway is just crusing at 80mph with the rest of the traffic which is borderline for where boost is on and off in my car in 5th

It can be done, used to get around that when commuting M5 J2 to J9 every day, an 80 mile round trip

Finally moved a bit closer to work (40 mile round trip) and promptly wrote off the Scooby Now got a 1.8 Passat and get about 32 mpg in that Will get another Scoob at some point but for pleasure use only.

I have a remapped 2006 JDM STI on a long run with a full tank I got 320 Miles when I drove to Cornwall.

Using it around town and as a daily commute you will get about 150-200 a tank.

The only performance mods on my car are

Full Decat
Green Airfilter
Remap by JGM

So this is pretty much what you can expect!

I've had a 1997 and 1998 sti (3/4) and I never got more than 25mpg. Your average day to day figure will be around 20mpg. If this is a problem, don't buy one. These cars were standard apart from a sports exhaust system by the way.

Same as me, miles to a tank that is. When i went cornwall just over 320 miles i needed to refill befor i got there and again on way home. Did 24.5 and 25.1 mpg. That 25.1 is going to cornwall was going 70-75 till radiator pipe split 45 miles from hotel, 3hrs for AA to get to me. When fixed booted it for the last 45 miles.
24.5 was around 70-80-90-100

Same as most here, I've got a STi v3 before I changed the engine I was gettin 20 - 23 mpg, I won't scare you by tellin you what it is now

And try A-plan for insurance

And if the car hasn't been re mapped for uk fuel make sure you use plenty of octane booster until it is even if you are using V-power, seriously don't drive a fresh jap import without it! I learned that the hard way

Drove to stirling in scotland once on a full tank £55ish 265miles all motorway and i guess i could of got another 30mile when i filled up, but that was the slowest most boring drive ever so on way back i cained it and only got half way before i had to fill up again but it was fun, now i only get 250mile out of a tank with my STI8 conversion at 411bhp, try not to think about mpg cos theres no point in a scoob 95 WRX STI8 conversion
