Smile EXHAUST COSTS?

My local garage charged me £200 to change my downpipe for a decat one, is this about right? I've just bought another wrx ppp and intend to change the exhaust for a decat again, would a exhaust & tyre place be able to do this job? I just wondered if they might be cheaper.Another job is to change the up pipe for a decat one, is this a long job? What's the likely charge for this? thanks for any advice, Mick.

ie £40 per hour for labour @ 5 hours = £200

Exhaust bolts can be a pain in the backside if they havent been off for a while.
If they are good bit of heat on them from a blow torch or oxy'c should free'em off. Might be an idea to have some spares just in case up strip one.

I changed my up-pipe on my bug myself, on my drive on ramps. Took about 6 hours from start to finish but that was changing the turbo aswell.
I'd never done one before and know little about Scoobs but have a good general knowledge of mechanics, but to be honest i'd think twice about doing it myself again. Wasn't to bad, i found it quite ackward and removed the maniflods to get room to get everything undone. Really didn't like undoing the nuts from the block to remove the manifolds. Strip one of those and youve got problems. Lambda sensor in the lower part of the up-pipe was a pain aswell.

I may have had more problems than others, depends on the quality/fit of the replacement pipe i suppose. In the end i undone the bottom engine mounts and jacked the block to give some room to get the new pipe in.
Like i say there may be an easier way to do this, but imo it's not the easiest of jobs.
Depends on how much a garage would charge to do it i suppose (Not £200), but i think i'd pay someone when it comes to up-pipe, but the downpipe shouldn't be any probs.

My local garage changed my downpipe for a decat one that I supplied myself.

They charged me £30.00 and that was only that much because they had to do some mods to the heat shield.

You have been ripped off big time

I changed my complete system from the turbo back last Saturday. Took 2.5 hours by myself. I was using my mates repair garage so the car was on a 2 poster. I couldn't be arsed with the hassle of doing it without a ramp. tea and *** breaks included so prob just a shade under 2 hours.

LOL at getting the nuts off. 2 of mine were missing!

is it £200 for the downpipe and fitting or just fitting?

if its to buy it off them and have it fitted its not to bad, if its just to fit it, its trading standards time as that is disgraceful! name and shame, I for one WILL ring them and have a go on your behalf!

I've just paid £150 to remove all cats (including up-pipe) and fit two decat pipes & sports cat downpipe, price included all gaskets and CEL fix.
