As stated, a decat is the way to go in terms of performance. The comments about the noise are rubbish. You'll notice a deeper tone but it is not a great deal louder. The backbox is key thing in terms of noise and an STI backbox will not be overly loud with a decat.
You do need to know a friendly MOT place or you need to replace your standard downpipe in order to pass an MOT on emissions. My first MOT next year with mine, so if it proves too much hassle I will go the PPP sports cat route.
It doesn't damage an engine either. Think about what you are doing - allowing it to breathe more freely. You may benefit from a remap though in order to get the full potential of the mod.
