Default Selling car. . . Help needed

Just needing some advice on the best way to do the deal on my car. Got someone viewing tomorrow who's very interested. They have asked if they agree on a sale, can they pay me £5000 up front in exchange for the v5 and hardtop (car's an s 2000) with the balance payable on collection of the car. This suits as the 5k will allow me to settle the outstanding finance ready for the guy to collect. Balance would obviously be paid on collection. Am i safe taking 5k and leaving the v5? Or should i insist on a small deposit then sort the full amount out when he collects? Sorry if its a stupid question, but never sold a car privately before!

It sounds dodgy-ish to me.
By taking the V5, I'm guessing the new seller wants it signed over to him. If he does that and takes the hardtop, he MAY just come back and take the car without paying the balance, because he would technically own it after signing the V5 over.
It might be a bit overboard, but you've got to consider these things. You can have Honda make a spare key once you have the V5 to show you own the car, so that might happen.
You never know. Don't mean to scare you, but it sounds dodgy to me. I mean, what else would he do with a hardtop and V5? He may aswell leave the whole lot until he's got the full amount.

Your post is a bit confusing.
I mean, what car are you actually selling? Are you selling a scoob in exchange for an S2000 and cash on top? or is the S2000 yours and you're selling that?

Anyhows, I wouldn't hand over the V5 until he has handed over ALL the cash because once you've signed it and given it to him, the car is HIS.
This means if he decides to not pay the remainder and take the car, there's nothing you can do.

mate do NOT do it

simple if he wants the car he can leave you a 100 pound in good will and on the honor of it is his and you will not sell to anyon else

holod the roof and the v5, if he really wants it he will not mind leaving a small deposit if he will not leave £100 then how can he expect you to give him a v5and the roof for 5k and trust him. if he cant trust you with £100

i am not saying he will rip you off but in todays world we have to safe gaurd ourselves first.

so dont do it as the next post i would hate to see, is my car has been stolen by the guy who was goign to by it thread

No

The hardtop leaves on the car when it is sold.

the buyer can pay off the balance owed on finance (with you) if you like and you get the remaining balance. Easy.

Let them leave a £ 100.00 or so deposit.

It just doesn not feel right, i know that you have met the potential buyer, even so it seems a littl eodd, a real genuine buyer will be happy with doing this the traditional way.

Nope - V5 goes with the car. You keep the cash. What if he drops you off a cheque - will you let him have the V5? Hope not...

Hundred or so quid will do - then get cash when they come to do the car changeover...

agree with everyone else 100 quid means the car is his and then the ballance is payed in cleared funds and he gets the lot.

Just get Sticky and Mick to wear the dark suit and shades....

Don't let go of the V5, although a bill of sale is his main legal clincher.
IMHO a V5 declares the registered keeper, not the legal owner.
