Hi guys,
Was on my way home about 30 mins ago & was on some good roads so i stretched her out abit. I Was at the top of 3rd, propably about 6000 rpm when i got a BANG! it popped out of gear & started a grinding banging noise really loud. the cars still drives but won't go into 3rd gear & is constantly grinding even when rolling in neutral. What have i done? Help much appreciated

If it's just my gearbox then why is it constantly grinding/banging even when in neutral? Also if it my 3rd then will i just need a 3 gear recon or a whole new box?

IIRC one of the shafts in the box is constantly spinning in the box. Does the noise go away when you press the cluch?
You're going to need the whole box rebuilt, re-using parts that can be, or a new box. If it's stripped third, then there is the potential that the teeth could damage other parts.
My advice, DONT drive it. You'll only make things worse.

Stop driving it now!!! sounds like you've blown 3rd , there will be lots of bits of 3rd gear floating around in your box, if your lucky and you hav'nt caused further damadge by driving it you should get away with a 3rd/4th gear rebuild, i did mine myself and it cost me iro £300 for the parts, 3rd/4th gear set, 2x lock nuts, and a pair of woodruf keys (and fresh oil).

echo halfpint. i fubared my box back in december last year. my symptoms were a little different. went to put some air in my tyres. car suddenly wouldnt find 1st or reverse. when it did, it went pop/bang. drove it home all gears working ok, but the horrible rattly noise underside was the killer.
basically my box had just worn out (135,000miles by then). first port of call was a ring to afore mentioned david @ a.p.i.
discussed my options, and i ended up with a complete recon rebuild for £900. if you get the box out and get it to a specilaist, like a.p.i. you may save other parts and have a smaller bill than myself. maybe just buggered 1/2 gears, whereas all 5 of mine were knackered from general wear of a awd system. based in warwickshire so closer to you than me.
