Default Geabox - longer 5th ???

I'm in need of some work doing on my gearbox as i attempted to change the input shaft seal on it and when it's gone back together it's currently not selecting any gears

anyway if i send it somewhere to be put back together correctly is it possible that i can get a longer 5th gear installed to help with motorway driving ?

I was thinking of a 6 - speed but have been told that the ratio's mean that the 6th isnt much longer than the standard uk 5th.

any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Chris.

Get the 5th gear from an equivalent year UK car and that will drop straight and give you better motorway cruising.

sorry for the confusion banny, i have a UK gearbox and wondered if i could make that even longer with a 5th from another spec car ????

I heard that the forrester 6 speed is a nice box for motorway driving, is that a straight fit ?

Cheers

I'm assuming your running an RA.
This is the path I nearly went down after completely destroying 4th & 5th in my box.
The taller 5th will create a huge step from 4th to 5th even from a highly revved 4th change.
Loads of us RA boys have done it, but I'm guessing the majority regret it.

Was typing as Minty was posting, understood to be a UK box

The Uk cars have the longest fifth, in regards to forrester 6 speed it is a veru nice box but is not a simple swap as you have to change the diff, prop and possible driveshafts, hubs and rear brakes.

yes...it's something that get's me down when I drive on the more open roads..i.e. motorways etc.

I try to keep to a maximum of 60mph no more in an attempt at trying to avoid load & heat....by my doing this I hope i'm not fooling myself into thinking it's protecting the mill

I have considered changing gears & maybe fitting a six speed box, however trying to remember the car's pedigree being an RA it's best to leave alone otherwise your compromising the beast that they are....

Quite simply their not motorway cars

I quite often use the motorway, allbeit short runs, @ 80 it is'nt really that much of a problem running around 4500rpm, and lets face it we should be sticking around the 70mph mark anyway.

Nice tidy example you have there

Indeed...I do keep up with the flow of traffic but don't go bo##oking along cooking everything, if I can trundle along at 60mph minding my own business & causing no problem I do....

Cheers for the comments
