Default selling modified car? break it up or no?

Is it worth selling a modified car as modified, or is it worth putting it back to as standard as possible?

I'm thinking of possibly selling my car, you see, as the government is about to steal 400 of my hard earned for a car that does less than 5k miles a year, and frankly, it's pissing me off, coupled with the high insurance cost etc etc it's getting to the point where it's just not worth keeping it any longer. Paying 140-150 quid in tax + insurance a month for a car that might, on a good month, do 150-200 miles seems crazy.

I'm not looking to sell yet (so no offers via PM etc), but could someone also give me an indication of what a realistic price would be in todays market for something with the following:

2003 blue UK WRX - 27000 miles. One owner from new. Full Subaru service history.

Exterior:
- STI8 gold wheels
- blue rally flaps (Mudban ones, i think)
- colour coded skirts
- STI fog light covers

Interior:
- Prosport stepper gauges in centre pod (boost, oil press, oil temp)
- Arc audio 6.5" comps in doors + dynamat etc etc. Sounds decent.
- Arc Audio 8" sub in boot.
- Phoenix gold 2x30W RMS amp for fronts
- Directed Audio 600W RMS amp for sub.
- Raised boot floor to hide amps etc.

Performance mods:

- API Exedy uprated clutch with lightened flywheel
- Lateral Performance 3 bolt headers and up-pipe (wrapped)
- TD05-20G Andy Forrest turbo
- H&S decat downpipe (3"->2.5")
- H&S decat centre
- Scoobyworld Afterburner resonated centre section
- PPP backbox
- STI pink injectors
- Walbro 255l/h pump
- Fuellab fuel pressure reg
- Apexi Power FC cone filter
- STI8 TMIC with undertray (modified to fit WRX scoop)
- STI intercooler spray
- Ecutek map by JGM.
- Godspeed 335mm brake kit with DS2500 pads / and or 8 pot k-sport 330mm kit with DS2500's (godspeed kit fitted but ksport's ordered)

The car currently runs 354bhp and 345lbft torque (delta dash estimate), but I'm getting bored with it to be honest. The car feels very fast indeed, but there's nowhere to drive it around where I live, so it ends up sitting in the garden until I come to start it at which point the battery will be flat because it hasn't been driven for so long (this happens regularly).

I want to get myself something like a 205 GTI, or maybe a Porsche 944 or something similar. Something that wont owe a lot of money and wont cost an earth just to have sitting outside, waiting for me to take it for an early Sunday morning drive down some country lanes.

So, is it worth stripping the bits off and selling the car in pieces (i.e. putting it back to standard), or would that be a huge waste of time for not a lot of gain? Obviously I can't strip off things like the clutch anyway.

are these part prices realistic?

Exterior:
- STI8 gold wheels - 150 quid?
- blue rally flaps (Mudban ones, i think) - 20 quid?
- STI fog light covers - need them after having had a FMIC. Could sell standard fogs - 40 quid?

Interior:
- Prosport stepper gauges in centre pod (boost, oil press, oil temp) - 50 quid?
- Arc Audio 8" sub in boot - 30 quid?
- Directed Audio 600W RMS amp for sub - 50 quid?

Performance mods:

- Lateral Performance 3 bolt headers and up-pipe (wrapped) - 250 quid?
- TD05-20G Andy Forrest turbo - 500
- H&S decat downpipe (3"->2.5") - 80
- H&S decat centre - 40
- Scoobyworld Afterburner resonated centre section - 50
- PPP backbox - 100
- STI pink injectors - 100
- Walbro 255l/h pump - 30?
- Fuellab fuel pressure reg - 150?
- Apexi Power FC cone filter - 25?
- STI8 TMIC with undertray (modified to fit WRX scoop) - 200?
- STI intercooler spray - 50?
- Godspeed 335mm brake kit with DS2500 pads - 300?
- 8 pot k-sport 330mm kit with DS2500's - brand new - 600?

Assuming I could get those prices, it's about 2800 quid - enough for a 944

I would say break it and sell the parts separate if you can be bothered with the hassle as nowadays you'll struggle to sell a modified scooby for much more than a standard one as nobody wants them at the moment thanks to Mr. Brown and Mr. Oil Tycoon

Or flipside of the coin (which is what I would do) if you wanted to test the water and put it up as it is, as it may well be only enthusiasts who want them at the moment. It may be exactly what somebody wants. If it doesn't sell then maybe strip it.

I may be interested in the gauges if you do decide to sell though, bro, if they are in the right colour.

It would be a shame to strip it i agree ^ but as for your realistic prices...they would be a bargain as they're so cheap, they all seem fair BUT your sti18 gold wheels for £150??? on ebay they go for 250-320, so dont offer them so cheap if you do, add a hundred or so to that! Jus a bit of advice for ya!

You could always strip the parts off, sell them for more than you have quoted and buy your 944 or whatever... keep the scoob (garage it) but take it off the road. Give it a couple of years and prices will recover, it's just the short term panic hitting at the moment for the market.

That's a good point actually. I don't think prices will recover for subaru's to be totally honest, but hopefully they won't soften a lot more for a while

I might hang on over summer and see what happens to taxes etc. There's some talk about a back bench MP rebellion against the road taxes, so here's hoping (although I'm not holding my breath)

Henrik what did you decide in the end? Seemed a shame to break it!

I decided to keep it and start driving it more instead Now it's become the main car, and the wife can drive the clio instead

In the end, I thought that it was a shame to spend so much money and not actually use it, plus if I got something else, the depreciation on that (which has already happened on the subaru to a large degree) would eat up most of fuel savings etc, and it wouldn't have 350'ish bhp on tap either

Having said that, the decision was helped by the fact that I'll be receiving extra money from my employer for two years to commute to our new office, which helps *a lot*, coupled with a KM insurance quote

Shame about thinking about stripping down your own pride and joy.

Be nice if you could sell it as it is for someone else to enjoy what you have done to it.
