Default hmm, oil leak somewhere...

ok smelt like oil for the last couple days. i presumed it was due to the warmer weather, but this morning it really stank. anyways took the mrs to work just now and even she commented.

so gets home and i have a look around the car, under the bay, check tyres arent rubbing. then i have a look under the car (bearing in mind its parked on a street...). it seems where the decat downpipe attaches to the centre section, its coated in oil by the looks of it so thats the smell.... but wheres the oil coming from? is it an engine leak or the gearbox?

gearbox was recently rebuilt in jan-early feb by api and fitted by scoobybits, so without knowing much, ive always been able to trust these guys.

i think im gonna get the car round the bak on the drive and have her up on my jack, get underneath and investigate.

can anyone offer me some advice, as im hoping this isnt an expensive job, maybe a seal or a filter, hopefully *gulp*

for the record there is castrol syntrax 75w90 in the 'box and millers 10w60 in the engine. last service was when the gearbox was put in, in jan along with new clutch etc.

cheers

andy

right, having had the car on axles stands and having had a good route round... omg the downpipe was lathered in oil.

taken some pics...

not sure if its the gearbox but the oil level was very low, hardly anything on the dipstick. so topped up with about 700ml of spare castrol i had and a bit of garden hose

hoping its a cheap fix, or maybe even a oil hose for the turbo? knowing me i doubt it.

anyways pics if anyone can help...

and this is the dipstick when i checked the oil level the first time

any help

From the way it spreads out in a line from near the driveshaft (pics 007/013/014) I'd guess you have a split in the driveshaft boot and the grease is melting on your exhaust.

I had a gearbox input shaft oil seal failure last year and oil went everywhere but didn't look like your pics, also geabox oil on the exhaust stinks and you don't mention any smell.

Could be grease from a split boot, but if you've lost gearbox oil it must be a driveshaft seal. Or both.
Surely you got a warranty with the rebuild, so if its a driveshaft seal it should be a free fix.

well youll be glad to know the problem is sorted and fixed.

went to scoobybits, and it was diagnosed straight away, the rubber on the drivers side shart was fubared. grease everywhere. so got a newage driveshaft put on, plus labout and vat, £105. so not as bad as it could have been.

gearbox oil... dunno maybe it was low or im too stoopid to read a dipstick properly.

thanks to scoobybits for taking the car in and fixing straight away, much appreciate it fellas.

diccy and chris.... appreciate your input, a wealth of knowledge i dont personally possess.

You did well. I'd have guessed a driveshaft repair would be more than that.

Can you not replace the boots on Scooby shafts
Or was the shaft damaged?
